Episode 171: The Rite of Spring (Training)

    in Baseball

In Episode 171 of Amazin' Avenue Audio, Chris and Jeffrey talk I-95 landmarks and Adam Loewen. Yes this is supposed to be our Spring Training preview, why do you ask? We do eventually get to that and talk craft beer, fried fish, seventh men in the bullpen, inevitable intercostal strains, and allude to stories we definitely cannot tell on the podcast. Next it is time for your e-mails on filling out the Mets roster, future old Mets pitchers..., *sigh* Dom Smith, Brandon Nimmo's defense, 2016 promotion ideas, and how Jeffrey has developed as a scouty dude. Then we wrap things up with a half-assed IFK Goteborg update and some pop culture suggestions.

Short & Junk: The Canon Cockblock

    in Entertainment

    Akane says:

I was writing a character redemption fic for the  2015 Nano then the character went and redeemed himself on the show... Now I've lost the drive to finish my story because canon satisfied me.

Also, Civil War is later this year and I'm definitely scared to see cause it's messing with my OTP.

So, here's my question - have you ever been cock blocked by canon? Are there ways to work around or push through it? Is it okay to just let the story go if you've lost the passion for it?

I recommend you also listen to: Short & Junk: Canon is for Pussies

WORLD WIDE AFRICA THE VOICE OF THE PAN AFRICAN MOVEMENT

    in Politics

    SENIORS AGAINST A FEARFUL ENVIRONMENT

"Seniors Against a Fearful Environment (SAFE), a nonprofit corporation, was begun by the Black Panther Party at the request of a group of senior citizens for the purpose of preventing muggings and attacks upon the elderly, particularlywhen they go out to cash their meager social security or pension checks. Prior to approaching the Black Panther Party, the seniors had gone to the Oakland Police Department to request protection. There the seniors were told, to their dismay and outrage, that they "should walk close to the curb" in the future. Mrs. Van Frank, founder of the East Bay Legislative Council of Senior Citizens and the state of California's Outstanding Senior Citizen for 1971, commenting on the dangers experienced by the senior citi zens, has remarked: "The fear engendered among us old people by these mug gings almost makes us prisoners in our own homes."

A section of a recent funding proposal for the SAFE Program substantiates these claims. A comparative crime study was done over a period of six weeks (August 21 to October 1, 1972) and details conclusively that the age of the victim does bear a de nite relationship to the type ofo ense committed. Ofthe com bined total of 249 victims of strong-arm robbery and purse-snatching, 48 per cent ofthe victims (118) were overthe age of y. During this same period, only 13 percent of complainants in armed robbery cases fell into the senior citizen category. The conclusion, then, is that an elderly person is more likely to be physically attacked, whereas the younger, more agile person, who is more able to a defend his- or herself, will more likely be the victim of an armed assault. The fact has also been established that 33 percent of all crimes committed in the city of Oakland are committed against senior citizens."

Denver proves to be Cam Newton's Kryptonite as Broncos claim Lombardi Trophy

    in Sports

The most valuable person of Super Bowl 50 may have been Wade Phillips. The Denver Broncos entered Super Bowl 50 with the number ranked unit in the NFL. The Carolina Panthers had scored 80 points in their two playoff games and had the leagues MVP running the offense. Phillips devised an aggressive game plan the pressured Newton and forced four Panther turnovers. Two Newton fumbles led to both Bronco touchdowns.

Peyton Manning came out of the gates looking like the Manning of old, leading the Broncos to an opening drive field goal. Manning completed four of six passes for 47 yards on the 10 play drive. After trading punts, the Panthers started their second drive at their own 15. On thrid down Von Miller broke the edge and instead of crushing Newton he stripped the ball. The ball was recovered in the end zone by Malik Jackson and the Broncos took a 10-0 lead. Prior to the touchdown, Newton found Jerricho Cotchery over the middle but the play was ruled incomplete after replay upheld the call.

Early in the second quarter James Stewart vaulted into the end zone from one yard out that made the score 10-7. Jordan Norwood broke a Super Bowl record with a 61-yard punt return that gave the Broncos a first down at the Carolina 14-yard line. The Panthers defense stood tall and held the Broncos to a field goal, which made the score 13-7.

Both teams added a field goal in the second half. With 4:51 remaining and the score 16-10, the Panthers took over on their own 24-yard line. Once again, Von Miller broke the edge and got his hand on the ball as Newton was cocked back and ready to throw. T.J. Ward recoverd the fumble and set the Broncos up at the Panthers 4-yard line. Josh Norman was called for holding on an incomplete third-down pass that gave the Broncos a first down at the 2-yard line. C.J Anderson bullied his way to the goal line and gave the Broncos a 22-10 lead. The ensuing two-point conversion was good.

Police Brutality: It's not all Black and White

    in US Government

Some say, "what you don't know, can't hurt you." Do you know your rights? What should you do if you are ever stopped or approached by a law enforcement officer? Racial tension is growing in America largely because of the media coverage of black males being killed by white police officers. However, there is more to the story than us outsiders actually know...until now!

Join host Tammy Gaitor and co-host Rodney Jordan as the Butterfly Evolution show welcomes Retired Police Chief Robert Moore for a "not to be missed" episode Monday, February 8, 2016. From the cotton fields of Mississippi to a presidential appointment by former United States president, Bill Clinton, Chief Moore served as the U.S. Marshal for the central district of Illinois. After a successful tenure, he returned to Jackson, Mississippi as the Chief of Police. Little did he know, he would have to fire an officer his first day on the job. "We know that there are bad cops patrolling your neighborhoods. We want them off of your streets just as bad as you do but you all are not helping us," he recently told a crowd of anxious young people at Howard University in Washington, D.C.

Chief Robert Moore is the author of the new history book, "The President's Men: Black United States Marshals in America. He is also well known for his numerous published articles in police magazines covering a wide range of topics including, Strategies for Increasing Black Executives, Racial Profiling, History of the Minority Police Officers in Illinois State Police, Solving the crisis of Black Youth in America.
