Wednesday, July 23, 3 pm ET, The Halli Casser-Jayne Show airs a 90 minute special INSIDE THE IVORY TRADE: IS IT TOO LATE TO SAVE THE ELEPHANT? Joining in the conversation are some of the top voices of the subject: Iain Douglas-Hamilton, Grace Ge Gabriel, Andrea Turkalo, Dr. Ron Orenstein,
In 1993, Iain Douglas-Hamilton founded the organization Save the Elephants. A zoologist, he is the recipient of the 2010 Indianapolis Prize for his work on elephant conservation. His chief research interest is to understand elephant choices by studying their movements. He is a frequent keynote speaker at the annual Wildlife Conservation Network expo.
Dr. Ron Orenstein is the author of Ivory, Horn and Blood: Behind the Elephant and Rhinoceros Poaching Crisis. Since 1987, Dr. Orenstein has been an observer at meetings of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). He was one of the engineers of the compromise amendment that led to an international ivory ban.
Field biologist Andrea Turkalo of The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) has been called “The Elephant Whisperer.” She is the world's leading expert on forest elephants, working tirelessly to map the sometimes inaudible, language of elephants, in an effort to put to together the world's first elephant dictionary.
A native of China, Grace Ge Gabriel is a driving force behind the International Fund for Animal Welfare China (IFAW) and has worked tirelessly to alleviate human-elephant conflicts and raise conservation awareness in the country that stands at the heart of the “blood ivory” illicit trade.
An important conversation you won’t want to miss “Blood Ivory and the Fate of the World’s Elephants” on The Halli Casser-Jayne Show, Wednesday, July 23, 3 pm ET. Tune in live online at Halli Casser-Jayne dot com.
Houston Rockets coach J.B. Bickerstaff called his team “broken” recently, and with the team currently out of the playoffs Dwight Howard could be on the move.
However, trading Howard may not be as easy as it sounds in theory as colleague Ben DuBose explained in a SheridanHoops column.
Trades talks are heating up with less than a week until the trade deadline on February 18.
Another player who may be dealt at the deadline is Phoenix Suns forward Markieff Morris who has wanted out since the summer when the team dealt his brother, Marcus, to the Detroit Pistons.
With that in mind, Michael Scotto of SheridanHoops.com joined Sportsnet 590 The Fan radio to discuss the latest on trade rumblings around the league and what the Rockets will do with Dwight Howard.
Carmelo Anthony's name is in the rumor mill yet again. Well, actually, it never left. He has been mentioned in trade scuttle ever since the New York Knicks, a team on the mend, re-signed him to a five-year, $120 million-plus deal in 2014.
This time, though, Frank Isola of the New York Daily News has him linked to a three-team deal with the Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers that would end with Melo playing beside LeBron James in C-Town. The framework in question, as you will hear, is unlikely.
But the constant chatter, coupled with rookie Kristaps Porzingis' meteoric rise through the NBA ranks, begets a more general issue: Should the Knicks be looking to trade Anthony now, or even at all? Hardwood Knocks breaks it down.

Join Ray Owczarzak in welcoming an old friend Doug Ludemann. Doug and I worked together a long time ago in a galaxy far far away. (Sorry for the reference). Doug has years of experience in the public and private aquarium fields and currently owns and operates Fish Geeks.
I’ve wanted to do a show on the ethical issues involved in the aquarium hobby and field for some time. When I first began my pet trade career at the age of 16 at a small mom and pop shop in Illinois, I was wide eyed and ignorant to the dark side of the trade. I sold snake head after snake head destined for home tanks without any thought about the possible impacts. Now that I live in Maryland, where the snake head makes advances year after year in waterways, I wonder about my past actions.
What other dark secrets are there in the aquarium hobby? I think, in retrospect, that any financial endeavor that requires the sale of live animals inherently has a few dark secrets. In fact, they are too numerous to mention in an hour show, but we will give it a shot.
Don’t get me wrong, I believe that the industry and hobby have many ethical companies and the preponderance of hobbyists are top notch. But as the saying goes, a few bad apples… Hopefully the discussion will provide some food for thought on the businesses that listeners use. Making ethical choices are up to the end consumer. We as a people have the best chance at guiding the future. So don’t just sit back be a Witness, but make a change for the better. As always, I hope that people join in the conversation and call in with thoughts and stories.
There are singers and then there are Vocal Architects. Maxayn Lewis is the latter - not only a coveted session and touring vocalist but a passionate and conscientious instructor and coach for people in all walks of life to use their voices to their maximum capacity. Just call it "The Max Factor!"
The resume of Maxayn Lewis is an impressive one that includes recording with artists ranging from Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross and Celine Dion to Michael Jackson and Madonna. She has toured with Quiet Storm greats Brenda Russell and Gino Vannelli, jazz legend Les McCann and renowned blues man Bobby "Blue" Bland, as well as many superstars in the Japanese pop world such as Omega Tribe, Toshinobu Kubota, Anri, Akina Nakamori, Sanno Motoharu and Namie Amuro.
Maxayn (pronounced max-ann - the "y" is silent) grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma as Paulette Parker, a region renowned for producing great musicians - from rocker Leon Russell to funk masters the GAP Band (both of which she has worked with). She came upon her vocal gifts naturally from her mother, C. Lorene Parker, who was a fantastic gospel singer but, more practically, a chef by trade. Maxayn cites her as well as the incomparable Nina Simone as major inspirations. She sang in a classical conservatory and later honed her chops in jazz nightclubs and the particularly demanding Marshall amplified music of rock clubs.
Her big break arrived when the legendary Tina Turner blew into town and recruited her for a world tour. On this tour, Maxayn wowed critics and musicians alike including English rock royalty David Bowie and Mick Jagger, who referred her for gigs.
