Toronto Raptors should trade for David Lee

    in Basketball

The Toronto Raptors are flush with salary cap space. Yes, they need to re-sign Sixth Man award winner Lou Williams, and they'll likely need to give him a significant raise after what he gave them.

But what about getting unrestricted free agents to come to Toronto? It has never been an easy thing to do (last summer's Kyle Lowry re-signing notwithstanding), and Masai Ujiri is going up against some awfully heavy hitters when it comes to going after the likes of LaMarcus Aldridge and his ilk.

If he strikes out on all of the big names, what might Plan B be?

Here's my suggestion: Go get David Lee, who the Golden State Warriors are trying to trade. He is a former All-Star, he is the consummate professional, and he can score in the low block better than Amir Johnson, Chuck Hayes, Patrick Patterson, James Johnson or any of the other power forwards Toronto used last season.

The Warriors have already told Lee they will attempt to move him, and Golden State knows it will not get equal value in return. What is important to the Warriors is ridding themselves of Lee's salary to keep themselves out of luxury tax territory. A future second-round pick might be all it takes to get it done, and adding Lee would give the Raptors a one-year rental on a solid player while keeping intact their cap space for the bonanza summer of 2016.

I tossed that idea at Toronto radio listeners this morning on Sportsnet 590-The Fan, and I also explained the strange free agent status of Atlanta's Paul Millsap -- and how that could be an option, too.

LYNETTE LOUISE AKA THE BRAIN BROAD WORKS MIRACLES WITH AUTISTIC CHILDREN

    in Culture

ENVISION THIS: Helping children to heal through love, play, neurofeedback, comedy, and music

Lynette Louise is an expert in Autism, and on how to incorporate neurofeedback, combined with play, as the main therapy approach for the autistic child.  She holds two board certifications in Neurofeedback and is working on her PhD in Clinical Psychophysiology. Most notably though, she is a mom extraordinaire! Without question her greatest pride is having raised eight children, (six adopted, five disabled, four on the autism spectrum).  At present, only one of her sons retains his label and remains dependent.

Lynette’s one-woman musical comedy show CRAZY TO SANE teaches with laughter, candor and toe tapping tunes including Unfinished and Brainiac. The show—and the CD-- are a collage of her life as the daughter of abuse, the mother of autism, and a student turned teacher of mental health. With artistic splendor she weaves the lessons of a lifetime, comedy, and brain science into this entertaining and emotional show. Besides healing and performing, she is a public speaker, hosts a radio show, and produces documentaries for the disabled, including Fix it in Five and Living with Lynette.

This extraordinarily multi-talented woman says, “Really, my vision in life was always to save children and to change the world through creative arts because it gets straight to people’s emotions. I never knew I’d be doing documentaries, but I guess I also never knew I’d adopt so many children either.”

    Mother’s Milk #SamiyyahSaafirMuhammad 323.927.2913

    in Family

Samiyyah Saafir-Muhammad was born Jacqueline Glover in New York City in 1951. After spending her early years in foster care, moving four times before the age of three, she settled in with her aunt, following her father’s passing.

While still in elementary school Samiyyah took an interest in helping other students do well, joining “The Future Teachers’ Club” in the fifth grade. As a high school student, Samiyyah became aware her people’s struggle for freedom—witnessing civil rights demonstrations, protests, assassinations and riots—and decided she wanted to help somehow.  It was in this atmosphere that she went off to Northeastern University in Boston where she majored in Education. Her stay there was short-lived, however, as she was introduced to the teachings of The Honorable Elijah Muhammad and thereafter joined the Nation of Islam. Within the Nation of Islam’s Muhammad University, Samiyyah underwent educational training and worked as a teacher’s assistant.

Since 2005, Samiyyah has had the privilege of serving as the Directress at Muhammad University of Islam in Atlanta, which serves students from Pre-K to the eighth grade. She has been blessed to carry on the 84-year educational tradition, which was started by the Honorable Elijah Muhammad and his brave followers in the 1930’s.

A widow after 35 years of marriage, Samiyyah presently enjoys the blessing of her and her husband’s nine children: six sons and three daughters, all of whom attended or are attending HBCUs. Samiyyah has been a mother to not only her nine children, but also to her two stepchildren, her nieces and nephews, her eight grandchildren and countless other children and adults in the community who come to her for advice, wisdom and guidance. Affectionately called MamaMiyyah, Samiyyah’s house is never empty.

    Continuing our conversation on alzheimer's

    in Caregiving

This week, Najja Brown will share her family's personal alzheimer's journey. Najja and her four sisters have been navigating their mother's care for the last ten years. Some of the descriptors Najja has used are: challenging, emotional, hope, and light. In fact, she's even likened some past moments to a "black tunnel." Yet, she readily adds that light, hope, and even joy can and does surface. I am convinced that Najja's experience will bring some, if not all who tune in to Monday's podcast a renewed vision for hope and light.

Najja, a native of Seattle, Washington attended the University of Washington and City University.  Najja holds a Bachelor's degree in Economics and a Master's degree in Public Administration.  As a single mother she reared two sons, who are now adults, and has two grandsons ages six and eight. She also teaches adult women's Bible study and mentors women of all ages.  A true believer and participant in service to her community and volunteerism, Najja is fluent in American Sign Language and very active in the Deaf community.  Join us on Monday, June 29th at 3:30 pm, PST.

June is alzheimer's and brain awareness month. If you missed Kristine Broome's helpful interview last week, it's available in the archives. Kristine is the caregiver services coordinator with the Family Support Caregiver Program in Seattle.
