In this day and age of intense partisan rancor in Washington, one thing that brings Republicans and Democrats together is their distrust of China. And one Chinese company that both the left and the right seem to love to hate is Huawei Technologies, the largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer in the world.
Just in October, the House Intelligence Committee released a report warning the U.S. government and private companies against doing business with Huawei. The Chairman and the Ranking Member of the Committee pointed out that Huawei can insert malicious hardware or software implants into its equipment, and allow the Chinese government to wage cyberwarfare, conduct economic espionage, and disrupt U.S. telecom networks that affect everything from electric power grids to banking and finance systems to rail and shipping channels.
Mr. William Plummer, Vice President of External Affairs at Huawei, disputes the accusations against Huawei and talks about the company's relationship with the Chinese government, the vulnerabilities of the global telecommunications supply chain, and the politics of the U.S.-China relationship.
The Affordable Care Act, or the ACA, (aka Obamacare) is a catalyst for accelerating change brought about by the crushing cost of healthcare. We have reached the tipping point where all the players in a $3 trillion industry are desperate to find new footing, while their usual way of doing business is crumbling underneath them.
Our guest today is Mike Bertaut. I’m asking him to “lift the fog” of war and politics and give us his insight into the ACA going forward, the chaos, what’s working, possible surprises, and what has yet to be addressed.
Michael Bertaut is a Certified Health Consultant and Professional of the Academy of Healthcare Management. He has 25 years of Analytical Experience in the Healthcare, Telecom, and Retail Industry Sectors. Since April of 2009, Michael has engaged in over 700 public discussions on Healthcare Costs and the Impact of Reform with stakeholder groups ranging from healthcare policy makers in Washington DC to your local public service clubs.
Kyle Freeman got started in business marketing in 1996 in San Diego,
California. He was the first field coordinator promoted in the region, in
record time. He left the company after several years and became the
head trainer of a similar company in the telecom marketing industry.
Spending many years with two different companies, he decided to set
out on his own. In 2003 he created Juice Marketing, Inc., he served as
President and CEO for the next five years. In that period of time under
his leadership the company JMI became JMI Telecom Corp a publically
traded company and one of the only minority owned public utilities in
NC and Kentucky. He is well known and respected in the network
Kyle served in the United States Navy as a Chief Petty Officer. After 24
years of service with the Navy and Naval Reserves he retired with
honors in 2008.
Now Kyle is ready for his next assignment as an author and speaker
his goal is to help small to medium size businesses as well as veteran
owned businesses find funding sources for their companies and
projects. Most new businesses fail within the first five years due to a
lack of funding. His knowledge of venture capital and source funding is
what helped him and his partners become a public traded company.
His goal to help 10,000 companies become publicly traded is lofty but
he is more than ready for the challenge. As in the Navy Chiefs lead
from the front.
Congressional reps, in their annual pique over the abuses of a couple of wireless companies, are attempting to once again throw out the broadband baby with the water of a corrupted few. Atty. Anthony Veach, from telecom industry law firm Bennet & Bennet PLLC joins us to discuss House bill 5376's threat to broadband usage in underserved communities.
Veach describes how the current FCC has made reforming its telecom industry-funded Lifeline grant program a priority, and discusses whether Congress's action threatens rather than helps create meaningful changes. Lifeline originally funded basic telephone service for low-income urban and rural households so no citizens would be economically forced to do without phone service. The Bush Administration expanded Lifeline to include wireless phone service as this was quickly displacing landlines. As smartphones become a primary device for accessing broadband, particularly in communities of color, Congress' action threatens to hit them particularly hard.
Listeners get an inside peek at Lifeline reforms to date, and what additional reforms are in the works. They also pick up some valuable insights into the Lifeline program, its main accomplishments over the years and some of the challenges the program faces as it tries to keep pace with technology changes not envisioned by Lifeline's original architects.

Digicel has blocked VoIP access (Viber, Tango etc) in Haiti, Trinidad and Jamaica. Other cell phone carriers such as Lime have done so as well. This has generated a firestorm on Caribbean social media, at least one petition and a reaction by the Trinidadian Telecom regulatory body who reinstated VoIPs in Trinidad while it deliberates the issue.
