Meet Team Rubicon - Serving Beyond the Uniform

    in Family

Lately, we hear more about helping our military members transition. With nearly a million projected to enter the civilian world in a 5-year span, "opportunity" is going to be the key word. Organizations are cropping up to assist the troops in translating their unique assets: unwavering dedication to task, adaptabilty despite obstacles, and exemplary leadership skills, to name a few. Meeting up with Team Rubicon is like watching opportunity blow up, in a good way.

The international non-profit disaster response organization unites the skills and experiences of military veterans with first responders to rapidly deploy disaster response teams, free of charge to communities affected by disasters across the country. By embracing decade-plus years of deployments and lessons learned, they have created a team of incident management personnel around an ingenious model of volunteerism.

Team Rubicon currently maintains a roster of 16,000 volunteers able to deploy throughout the United States with teams in 10 regions. They stand ready to send volunteers to emergency situations: fire, flood, emergent home repair, and natural disasters. Team Rubicon response teams arrive with all the necessary equipment too. Military structure coupled with engrained flexibility enable the teams to fully integrate into an existing incident and perform disaster response functions in unparalleled style. With service projects, fellowships, field ops, training, and veteran resources, Team Rubicon is doing incredible work. Join us for an inspiring hour with a Team Rubicon Leader / Division 3 Administrator, Nicole Green. We'll chat about the mission and how these volunteers are giving back. Clearly, serving our nation doesn't end in taking off the uniform. Team Rubicon: http://www.teamrubiconusa.org/

054: How Team Rubicon provided a Renewed Purpose feat Chad Reynolds

    in Health

I'm a huge advocate for Team Rubicon. I have been for a while now. I've interviewed both co-founders, Jake Wood and William McNulty. Both guys are super impressive.

One of their staff members gifted me a ticket to the Concert for Valor on the National Mall. During the concert, they showed various videos honoring veterans and veteran organizations. Team Rubicon was one of those organizations. In their video, miliary veteran Chad Reynolds talked about his struggle with emotional health and suicide.

I was moved by Chad's story and reached out to him immediately. He gave it some though and agreed to join me on 1, 2, Many: Veteran Suicide.

Chad speaks about getting out of the military, joining the VA, becoming a police officer, and then volunteering for Team Rubicon. The journey he went on to discover a renewed purpose is inspiring and I believe many of you can resonate.

    Episode #197 - Team Rubicon, Joydeep Roy-Bhattacharya

    in Military

This week we'll welcome Nicole Green & Geoff Ball of Team Rubicon and author Joydeep Roy-Bhattacharya.   Nicole and Geoff will join us to talk about some recent Team Rubicon mobilizations and the potential for more as we progress though this year’s hurricane season. We’ll also talk about natural disaster preparation and how you can support or join Team Rubicon.   Joydeep will join us to discuss his novel about the war in Afghanistan, The Watch.  THE WATCH begins with a young Afghan woman mourning the death of her brother, the sister of an Afghan insurgent killed in battle while trying to overtake an isolated U.S. military base in the Kandahar Province. Tradition dictates he must have a proper Muslim burial, and so she approaches the base to demand the return of his body. For the troops inside the base, however, experience has taught them that nothing in this place is what it seems. After an intense night-long battle that has left many of their own dead, they now have to make sense of this young girl. Is she the grieving sister she claims to be? A suicide bomber? A spy? A decoy? Roy-Bhattacharya leaves his reader asking those very same questions as THE WATCH unveils each characters’ story.

Sue Ellen Allen on Expert Insights Radio!

    in Self Help

    3pm ET / 2pm CT / 1pm MT / 12pm PT

    (Outside US: Dial 00 + 1 + 646-727-1711)

Viki Winterton interviews Sue Ellen Allen!

Sue Ellen is a former University of Texas grad, former educator, former business owner, former community leader, and former inmate at Arizona State prison.

She is a current author and activist promoting education behind bars. She serves as Executive Director for Gina’s Team, an organization that brings educational programs and speakers into prison to inspire and empower the inmate population to strive for a better future and a successful reentry. Gina’s Team is named for her prison roommate who died there of medical neglect. Gina’s death was a defining moment of Sue Ellen’s journey, giving her life a new purpose and passion.

In prison, under harsh conditions, she survived advanced breast cancer and learned to turn pain into power. She also learned that not all prisons are behind bars, and that every journey has a purpose. Overcoming incredible odds, she found her purpose and now works with prison officials, legislatures, and interns from Arizona State University to serve the forgotten population behind bars, so that upon their reentry to society they will join our community as positive, contributing members.

The award-winning author of The Slumber Party From Hell, a memoir about her prison journey, her writing has also been included in Serving Productive Time by Tom and Laura Lagana, authors of Chicken Soup For the Prisoner’s Soul. Additionally, many of her poems were published in Cosmopolitan magazine under the leadership of Helen Gurley Brown.

Andrew Goldstein's big 10 years. Homophobia in the referee world.

    in LGBT

In 2004, then-Dartmouth lacrosse goalie Andrew Goldstein wrote a powerful piece for Outsports about coming out to his lacrosse team. Since then, Andrew has played professional lacrosse, moved to Los Angeles, got married and is now on his way to curing cancer. Earlier this year he met Braeden, a young lacrosse player who was struggling with being gay. Goldstein knew he had to do something to help Braeden. This Sunday, Aug. 30, ESPN will air the story of Andrew, Braeden and the Courage Game that helped save young Braeden's life. We'll talk to Andrew about the story and his last 10 years.

This week a closeted gay high school football official in Louisiana wrote about his experiences there with homophobia and sexism. More and more gay officials are now talking with us about the environment they face from fans and from their fellow referees. We'll talk about the forgotten corner of the sports world and how we'll make it better.
