My Guest Tonight is Aaron Beltran. He’s 23 years old and because of several concussions and head injuries he is multiple Brain Injury Survivor. He I only had a slight concussion was dizzy and got sick after a little while. Then I was fine did not think too much of it. He was told by his Doctors that if I ever hit my head again I probably will not be here anymore. The first time I have had a concussion. I was in fourth grade playing football with all my friends and as I was running to catch the ball, I ran into a tree. I only had a slight concussion was dizzy and got sick after a little while I was fine and did not think too much of it. Then about six months later, I was riding a horse that took off with me. I ended up falling off my helmet came off and I hit my head hard. It also broke my arm on this fall. My mother rushed me to the doctor as I had seizures with this head injury. I don’t remember too much about just what people have told me. Then a couple of years later I was at a horse show and I jumped the fence when I went over the head of my horse and fell on my head. I was wearing a helmet and a safety vest. I still had a bad concussion and was dizzy and sick for two days. A lot of years went by and every now and then for no reason I would get a little dizzy at times and did not think much of it. At the time I was 18 years old and them out foxhunting in Maryland coming up to a jump the horse decided to stop now, when I was foxhunting. We didn’t have a harness on a helmet, so as a horse stopped his head came up hit me in the face and the helmet flew off. I did stay on the horse and had a bloody face my helmet flew off. I did stay on the horse and had a bloody nose, but being who I am. I brushed it off and kept on going for another hour. When I did get back to the barn the grooms asked if I was okay. They said I was white as a sheet and I told them I didn’t feel very well, so they put me in the car and took me to the hospital.

It's October of 1993 in Hawaii. A drunk driver hurtles toward a bend in the road. From the opposite direction, accomplished advertising creative and triathlete Phil Slott takes a routine drive. As he eases into the bend, he meets the drunk driver skidding into the wrong lane and, in one second, Phil's life takes a dramatic turn. As he struggles to stay alive in the ICU, Phil's organs, bones, and much of his brain are broken. What he and everyone else come to realize is that his creative drive and passion remain intact. And these abilities serve as the foundation for his arduous yet inspiring road to recovery. This is more than his story. Written in collaboration with his wife, Mary Spears, Damage Control: A Brain Injury Survivor Helps You Beat the Odds, is a tough-love conversation and guide for those who have survived a traumatic brain injury (TBI). It is intended to help other survivors regain hope and quality of life. Available on AMAZON more info: http:// www.philslott.com. Welcome to another episode the Brain Injury Round Table.
This week Dr Pauline and Catherine have the pleasure of talking with Austin Shepard and his mom Shelly. Austin had a traumatic brain injury in 2003 (at age 10). Even after being in a lengthy coma and having one hospital discharge him because they felt they couldn't do any more for him, his parents didn't give up hope. There's more to the story...listen in to hear about it! Since then, he has gone on to become an Eagle Scout, and launch a company called You Inspire Me! Speaker's Bureau. He has also become a Mosaic Ambassador for the Small Business Development Center. His vision for his company is to change the world by inspiring one person at a time and encouraging them to do the same. Please visit Austin's website at www.bumponthehead.com to see what amazing things he's been doing and how you can help, and e-mail him at email@example.com if you or someone you know has a story to share. As always, we welcome your comments and questions through Facebook (Dunamas Center Ministries), and Twitter (@YourDunamasLife).

Our guest tonight is Martha's daughter, Mia Dalene Marcum-McCoy, Her book Phenomenal Brain Power: from brain injury to brain awakening is an inspirational account of her journey to reclaim her life after a 2001 brain injury in a car vs bicycle collision. She recalls awakening to an altered sense of self and a need to fine meaning in the chaos that her orderly, purpose-driven life had become. Her dream-life took a bad turn on that fateful day in 2001. She was the epitome of the millennial woman; newly divorced, mother of two, bright well educated and well positioned to succeed in her career. An undiagnosed concussion turned her life upside down and turned it into a cruel caricature. Slowly and painfully she came to terms with the need to create a new dream, a new life and a new self. Phenomenal Brain Power is both a roadmap and journal of the trip of a lifetime.
