Dr Dan Peters and Dr Susan Daniels - Cultivating Original Talents in Gifted

    in Education

GIFTED KIDS, ADHD, AND AUTISM: WHY TWICE-EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN ARE STUCK AND HOW TO HELP THEM

Hosted by Diane Kennedy and Rebecca Banks, authors of Bright Not Broken and The ADHD-Autism Connection with Dr Temple Grandin.

As we have discussed many times on our show taking a whole child approach is optimal in discovering how to best assist children with Twice-Exceptionality (Giftedness, Autism, Adhd...) Once we understand the many factors that underlie a child's giftedness and his unique intensities, we can more deeply appreciate and support the whole child. Our overriding goal as parents should be to cultivate the wonderful and original talents in our children. Everything else-supports, interventions,therapies,education-should be undertaken with this goal in mind.  We begin this series featuring Dr. Dan Peters and Dr.Susan Daniels founders of The Summit Center in California. Dr. Peters has devoted his career to the assessment and treatment of children, adolescents, and families, specializing in overcoming worry and fear, learning differences such as dyslexia, and issues related to giftedness and twice-exceptionality. He is author of Make Your Worrier a Warrior: A Guide to Conquering Your Child’s Fears and From Worrier to Warrior: A Guide to Conquering Your Fears. In addition, he is co-author of Raising Creative Kids. Dr. Susan Daniels is Educational Director of the Summit Center. She provides Differentiated Educational Plans for children and adolescents as part of the Gifted Comprehensive and Gifted Complex Assessments. Dr. Daniels is also an internationally recognized expert in the field of gifted education and creativity. She specializes in the social and emotional development of gifted children and adolescents, intensity and sensitivity of gifted individuals across the lifespan, and the development of creative potential.

    Sunday On The Front Stoop

    in Energy

Dennis, Jeff and Susan have an interesting discussion.  All these years when America has had “free” grade school and high school, why has college been so expensive?  When a student graduates high school the average age is 18.  That’s the same age when he or she can become a military soldier.  If they can not afford that expensive college, they’ve been told to just go overseas for a few years and they will be granted access to higher education.  The sad news is that some of these teenagers never return home, dying while serving in the military.  Even some that are lucky enough to return home, commit suicide after returning from these wars.  When they return home, they are reminded of their loving, religious upbringing.  They had been taught to “love thy neighbor” and “thou shalt not kill”.  If they were told overseas to “go in that house and kill anyone you see” they now mourn for all those innocent men, women and children that they killed under military orders.

Although many political leaders are in the news “mourning the loss of our troops overseas” we continue to send our sons and daughters into the military just so they can afford that expensive college that they really (feel they) need.  Reform is now coming as President Obama is now recommending that college become as free to our students as was their grade school and high school.  Instead of learning to kill, high school grads can now continue to learn the truth of how to save our planet.  As an example, Saudi Arabia is #6 on the list of dictatorships in the world.  They get most of their weapons from countries like ours and we get a low price for the oil under their ground.  Instead of sending our boys and girls overseas to get that good price on mid-east oil, why not switch to solar or wind power?

    SERIAL-Susan Simpson

    in Entertainment

In 1999, the body of Hae Min Lee was found in a shallow grave in Baltimore's Leakin Park. Six weeks later, her ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, was arrested and charged with her murder. The state's case against Syed hinged entirely on the testimony of Jay Wilds, who said that he had been with Syed on the day of the murder, and that he had assisted with the burial in Leakin Park. At trial, the prosecutor argued that although Wilds had repeatedly given false and inconsistent statements concerning the crime, his story was corroborated by Adnan's cell phone records. Syed was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison; Wilds pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact, and was released without serving a day in prison.

Last year, the creators of This American Life covered Syed's story in the popular podcast Serial. In order to better visualize the events that were being described on the show, Attorney Susan Simpson put together a series of maps comparing the location data from the cell records with the various witness statements concerning the location of the phone throughout the day on which Hae Lee was murdered. The result showed just how fragmented and incoherent the prosecution's case was, as none of Wilds' multiple stories can be reconciled with the cell phone data. It also highlighted many of the gaps in the prosecution's evidence, and showed how numerous witnesses who could potentially have confirmed or denied Jay's stories were never contacted by investigators. We'll also cover the recent Calvary Chapel Pastors conference and talk about our differences with Calvinists and Emergents. If they are our brothers in Christ, should we be in fellowship together? What are the hindrances to that?
