Dr. Berkelhammer is the author of "In Your Own Hands: New Hope For People With Chronic Medical Conditions ~ Mindfulness Based Practices for Mastery and Well Being" which serves as a guide to help those living with chronic illness, as well as their caregivers, learn to live with conscious intention to maximize health and wellbeing.
Anyone can benefit from listening to this show as he will reveal the benefits of Mindfulness, Gratitude, How to Follow Your Personal Values, and much more...
Dr. Larry Berkelhammer has lived with several chronic medical conditions since childhood. For decades he endured the frustration of not knowing the causes of his physical problems. Then, well into adulthood, he was diagnosed with two autoimmune diseases and a primary immunodeficiency disease. At the same time, he was told there were no known cures for any of them and that treatment for some would make others worse. A long-time mindfulness practitioner faced with this reality, Dr. Berkelhammer became curious about what practical steps he and others could to do improve health and well-being. He trained with several world leaders in psychooncology, psychophysiology, and psychoneuroimmunology
In Your Own Hands chronicles Dr. Berkelhammer’s personal experiences with his past work as a practicing psychotherapist to give those struggling with chronic illness practical steps to take their health into their own hands, using the techniques of mindfulness and mastery.
Dr. Berkelhammer is now retired and spends his time writing, teaching and serving non-profit organizations that serve people with chronic medial conditions. For more information, please visit www.LarryBerkelhammer.com.

Mental illness, specifically chronic depression hits the black community more often than any other group, but black Americans are much less likely to seek out professional help. Why does this continue to be taboo?
The American Psychiatric Association further states Culturally diverse groups often bare a disproportionately high burden of disability resulting from mental disorders. This disparity does not stem from a greater prevalence rate or severity of illness in African Americans, but from a lack of culturally competent care, and receiving less or poor quality care.
For some disorders, such as schizophrenia and mood disorders, there is a high probability of misdiagnosis because of differences in how African-Americans express symptoms of emotional distress.
All in all, we have a serious problem with mental illness in the black community and our hope through this conversation is to begin a much needed dialogue in hopes of debunking mental illness myths.
An individual who was sexually abused as a child is an adult survivor of child sexual abuse. This abuse may have had long-term effects on the survivor’s life. In most instances, the victim of the abuse never discussed the abuse with others while it was occurring. This individual is learning now, as an adult, to deal with the effects of the abuse.
Possible Long-Term Effects:
Each individual’s experiences and reactions are unique to that individual. However, with so many survivors breaking the silence and talking about their experiences, it has become apparent that there are some responses to child sexual abuse that are common to many survivors.
Feelings of extremely low self-esteem or self-hatred are common in survivors. Extreme depression is something with which survivors also battle.
Survivors often experience frequent sleep disturbances and nightmares. Links have been made between this and the fact that children are often sexually abused in their rooms, in their own beds.
Trust is a crucial issue for many survivors throughout their lives. They were betrayed by the very people who cared for them, who insisted they loved them even while abusing them.
Re-victimization describes the process whereby women who were sexually abused as children frequently find themselves in abusive, dangerous situations, or relationships as adults.
Survivors with disabilities who experienced sexual abuse in childhood might never have reached a level of independence to escape this abuse and it has become a way of life.

What Does Having A Life Threatening Illness /Disease Force A Person To Challenge, Learn And Overcome?
Debbie Berkelhammer (www.debbieberkelhammer.com ) is Author of the new book "Point of View: POV on Dying and Living." She is available to share her insight with your audience.
Debbie overcame a life threatening disease and hopes to help other in a similar situation emerge victorious as well.
Debbie Berkelhammer POV
· Once you are diagnosed with an illness or disease, who you are and your path is forever changed. It’s how you move forward that will define this new life.
· There are many challenges, these challenges are not just in the beginning of being diagnosed but rather each day moving forward, especially if you are diagnosed with an illness that could reoccur.
· I look at illness as steps to overcome, denial, fear, anger, weakness, aggression, hopelessness, acceptance, hopefulness, strength, faith, hope, truth and gratefulness and trust. Each one of these steps plays a role in your illness and how you move forward and live your life. But sometimes, losing footing happens and you have to start over with the steps and have the hope and strength to know you will get better.
· I have learned to accept my illness and that i can not live with "what if", i have to live with the thought I will. I will live, and I will thrive.
