Big Wave Surfing - Water Safety
The Best Practices Or Not?
The words fit easily enough, but do they work?
What is big wave water safety?
It's broiled in the concepts from the EMS responder mindset, the atheltes involved, the sponsors who support equipment or fuding for expeditions, the silent families left behind and the water rescue specialist.
Whom is considered a subject matter expert for all of these applications? Self appointed or real world tried and tested, their worlds often clash in a conflict of experience, attitude and capability.
Ask me how I know?
I've been a vocale witness of this silent creep of safety chatter since 1993 when the Strapped Crew first began the catalyst we see today adopted by everyone interested in all those years of plying; safety still has not been taken seriously.
What is involved?
2. Swell/Wave Energy (weather considerations, tidal/wind/power)
3. Athlete mindset, capability (time in water and experience level, physical fitness)
4. Type of boards (tow boards/towlines/surfboards/rescue boards)
5. Preparation (training, safety gear, rest/hydration)
6. Type of Rescue Water Craft (RWC)
7. RWC training techniques and practices (credentials and accredetion)
8. EMS response, equipment, timelines, transport (land, air, water)
9. Fame or Blame - Media pressure, sponsorship expectation by athlete, athlete claim to fame, explotation of surf sites
10. The Hate Factor of Modern Surfing (everybody hates somebody-negative aspects of the sport prevent or block the ability for unity and community to further create associate bodies with lack of effective leadership values, its a 'solo' sport)

A Life Outside, directed by Catherine Brabec, is the story of the relationships of six New Jersey surfers: Greg Mesanko, Chris Mesanko, Kevin Casey, Jim Purpuri, Richard Luthringer, and Bucky Walters, who got on a surfboard for the first time close to 50 years ago and haven’t stopped their pursuit of surf to this day. As the surf boom took hold in the 60's, Casino Pier was not only one of the best surf spots on the east coast, it was also one of the most competitive and closely guarded by the locals. The Pier has been an icon for decades and is now all but destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. This is the story of these surfers and the Pier- then and now. Surfing the Pier was a privilege earned, a territory fiercely protected. You didn’t just own a board and paddle out, you had to be invited and then show quickly that you were good enough to be allowed in. So while surfing was a connection, friendships were complicated by the fierce competition in the water. Out of the water, surf shops were the gathering spot, the clubhouse, and Grog’s Surf Palace in Seaside Park was the mecca of the east coast. His shop created an intersection of surfers from around the world as surf culture and industry began to build. A Life Outside weaves their stories along side the lives of the NJ men, exposing that regardless of fame or monetary rewards - at the core is the same unrestrained passion and single focus to surf. Today, close to 50 years later, all these guys are still surfing. In October 2012, we filmed a surf trip in Baja MX with the NJ crew. Corky Carroll, Mike Doyal and Mickey Munoz joined us for an amazing week. Then, just 3 weeks after returning home to NJ, Hurricane Sandy hit. Towns, homes, and the Casino Pier were destroyed. The lives of our NJ crew forever changed. To preview the trailer, visit https://vimeo.com/84900247

Our responsibility is to create something long lasting which include solutions. Part of that process is to think and re-think how we are addressing our issues and concerns. While we discuss getting to that level we think it is important to include Grow Folks Music. Something that you can listen to while you are studying, surfing the internet, or on your facebook. We are opening up an avenue for our Sisters and Brothers who are incarcerated to use this venue to stay connected to their families. Maybe a dedication show we will keep you informed on our progress. Susan Allison --you may know her as the highly successful author of Conscious Divorce and Empowered Healer-- never believed in love at first sight-until it happened to her.
Then on a full-moon night in June 1994, she met Thomas Hickenbottom--already the author of five books of poetry, and eventually, the award winning novel Local Tribes and a history of surfing in Santa Cruz--at a writer's group, and had tea with him afterward. Then the magic began. Star-struck, they each went home, stayed up all night and wrote full-moon poems to share at the next group. Their poems had the same title and similar message!
They continued to write love poems through three separations caused by fear over the intensity of their feelings, and wrote poetry to celebrate their wedding at the summer solstice in Santa Cruz, California. They celebrated their love with three re-commitment ceremonies, and kept writing poems to each other during their blissful 17-year marriage as true Soul Mates. Susan even wrote poignant poetry about her husband's cancer and eventual death in August of 2013. In the darkest times, their love continued to light the way.
Before Thomas' transition, he and Susan agreed they would tell their story through their love poems as an inspiration for others longing for the same kind of deep, enduring love. They wanted their poetry and their love to show that finding one's Soul Mate IS possible. They wanted to model for readers how to live and love in a soul-mated union by creating a dialogue, with a poem of Thomas' and one of Susan's facing each other like love letters being exchanged. Read in order, their poetry tells the story of their love over nineteen years. http://www.empoweredhealer.com/
