Hybrid Jazz From Trish Hennessey - with KENYA!

    in Music

First, let's thank awesome promotions "star", Jason Gorov, for the introduction!  Jason sent "Let Me" by Kenya in 2015 and yours truly listened HARD.  That song popped off the page.  Then, hearing other tracks from "My Own Skin" was more confirmation.  During the holiday season, our guest's take on "Little Drummer Boy" knocked dozens of socks OFF all over the country and the world.  Kenya was on a mission to convey that treasured piece in HER way - and we felt the emotion.

This enterprising artist has been working hard for some time.  Not only a superb vocalist (trained by the same legendary coach as Dianne Reeves), Kenya is also a songwriter, clinician, educator and Mom.  She knows how to balance the plates in the air - and shows up EARLY, if you dig what that means ;)

A native of Denver, this powerhouse had a Dad who made SURE that she appreciated Jazz.  Calvin McGuire used to be a drummer and worked alongside Marvin Gaye.  Growing up, she heard Billie and Grover - but she also was drawn to Minnie Riperton and Stevie Wonder.  HE was a true inspiration.  Jazz, Soul and Pop/Rock - Kenya appreciated The Police and Robert Palmer, too.  Her love of music and her ability resulted in participation in city-wide choirs in middle school.  At Howard University in D.C., she was involved in the esteemed Gospel choir there.

With a Bachelor's in Physical Therapy and a Masters in Counseling and Student Development, she had all the tools that she needed to succeed financially.  But she missed music.  A life-changing retreat in Sedona, Arizona, paved her renewed spiritual journey.  After two EPS - now, "My Own Skin", Kenya is exactly where she needs to be.  Success on multiple charts is God's way of letting her know that the world is READY!  Join us on 2/2 - and meet Kenya!

C.D. - We're Actually Whining Over the OSCARS? (YET, I'M NOT

    in Islam

The Oscars - the 88th, scheduled for February 28th.

    Stars, lights, the Red Carpet.

THE crowning event of the entertainment industry.

Haven't watched that cesspool in years.

BUT, it has generated a lot of attention, due to the fact, that for the 2nd year in a row, all nominees in the 20 major acting categories are all white, thus - you guessed it - it lacks diversity!

In all fairness, I didn't see Concussion, which starred Will Smith; given his superb acting, it does seem a bit strange that he wasn't nominated, given the subject matter covered (head trauma among NFL players).

Nor did Chiraq, produced by Spike Lee.

Didn't see either, nor the other "privilege" movies, BUT, is it possible, that other movies, actors and actresses were simply better?

Is there a "law" that states, a black / non-white movie or performer must automatically be given a slot in any of these 20 major categories?

    Academy-Affirmative Action?

Weird and sad to me, but I'm sure there are those will inextricably connect this to the history and at times today, of systemic racism.

In the meantime, all gloves are off, for the 2016 presidential races, for both parties.

Her "highness" Hillary Clinton, at least on the surface, is running desperate, with mud-slinging that can be best characterized as - pure CLINTON.

The unraveling is amusing, and I hope I ultimately will get the last laugh.

On the GOP side, Donald Trump continues to gain momentum, even as Senator Ted Cruz make headways with voters.

And YES, the "birther" issue is legit, and WILL be used by the Democrats, should Cruz

LOTL Radio Welcomes Terri Lyne Carrington. "The Mosaic Project: LOVE and SOUL"

    in Music

Terri Lyne Carrington arranged and produced

Natalie Cole’s last recording titled “Come

Sunday,” featured on Carrington’s current CD, The Mosaic Project: LOVE and SOUL, released in August 2015. “Come Sunday” is Duke Ellington’s sacred classic, which was originally made popular by Mahalia Jackson.

Terri initially met Natalie Cole as a teenager

Terri also performed with Ms. Cole on the

    concert stage.

The Mosaic Project: LOVE and SOUL presents Carrington leading a rotating cast of superb female instrumentalists and vocalists that includes Oleta Adams, Natalie Cole, Paula Cole, Lalah Hathaway, Chaka Khan, Chanté Moore, Valerie Simpson, Nancy Wilson, Jaguar Wright and Lizz Wright, as well as saxophonist Tia Fuller, trumpeter Ingrid Jensen; bassists Meshell Ndegoecello and Linda Oh; and keyboardists Geri Allen, Patrice Rushen and Rachel Z.

On The Mosaic Project: LOVE and SOUL, Carrington juxtaposes her salute to female artists by paying homage to various male artists who have either influenced her professionally and/or informed her musicality, such as Nick Ashford, George Duke, Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra, Luther Vandross and Bill Withers. “Whenever I do something that celebrates women, I never want it to feel like it’s something that excludes men,” she explains. “On this record, I consciously wanted to celebrate the various relationships women have with men either through original songs of mine or cover songs by male composers and song writers.” The male presence and perspective on The Mosaic Project: LOVE and SOUL is even more realized by Billy Dee Williams, who contributes insightful spoken-word interludes through the disc.
