Tune in and listen up as we share the story of Sundiata Keita (b. abt. 1210- d.abt.1260) the founder of the Mali empire in West Africa. He is regarded as a great magician-king and the national hero of the Malinke-speaking people (Mandinaka, Malinke, Bambara), and a celebrated hero. The epic of Sundiata is primarily, transmitted by generations of Mandinka griots (djeli or jeliw). The famous West African ruler Mansa Musa was his grandnephew.
Sundiata, or Sun Djata, was also known in the Tarikhs (Moslem chronicles) as Mari Djata. Keita is a widely used family name. He is to West African history what King Arthur is to English history, in that both are popular figures about whom very little is known with certainty.
This show will share some of the little known facts about this extraordinary Ruler of the Mali Kingdom.

"Marcus Garvey was a proponent of the Black Nationalism and Pan-Africanism movements, inspiring the Nation of Islam and the Rastafarian movement. Social activist Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Jr. was born on August 17, 1887, in St. Ann's Bay, Jamica. Self-educated, Garvey founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association, dedicated to promoting African-Americans and resettlement in Africa. In the United States he launched several businesses to promote a separate black nation. After he was convicted of mail fraud and deported back to Jamaica, he continued his work for black repatriation to Africa. Marcus Mosiah Garvey was the last of 11 children born to Marcus Garvey, Sr. and Sarah Jane Richards. His father was a stone mason, and his mother a domestic worker and farmer. Garvey, Sr. was a great influence on Marcus, who once described him as "severe, firm, determined, bold, and strong, refusing to yield even to superior forces if he believed he was right." His father was known to have a large library, where young Garvey learned to read" (http://www.biography.com/people/marcus-garvey-9307319#awesm=~oGP6uyhVqG3DuG).

Do we need black history month?
In our current phase of acknowledgment and celebration of Black History Month, the focus has been almost exclusively on the African experience in America since slavery. This period represents a small dot on the timeline of African history. It is to our benefit and edification, not only for ours but all future generations, to widen our perspective and embrace the full breadth of our experience on this planet, and drink from the entire Tree of Knowledge that our ancestors have cultivated. This would include the contributions by Africans in science, astronomy, spirituality/religion, architecture, medicine, agriculture, literature, mathematics, government, art, music, etc. To do less would not honor the wishes of our noted historians who have worked tirelessly to uncover this glorious past. Included among this cloud of witnesses would have to be Carter G. Woodson, the founder of Black History Month.
