In todays episode of SWAG Radio, Yara Kaleemah and Shatika Turner will be discussing women who write street lit with Shan Marie.
Shan Marie was born, Shanna Marie Teasley in December of 1980 to Deacon James (deceased) and Deaconess Priscilla Teasley. Although born in Atlanta, GA she was raised in Decatur, GA (east of Atlanta) and discovered her love for writing at a very early age. Searching for a place to belong and how she could fit into the equation of life, at the tender age of nine, she wrote her first short story. Always having a vivid imagination – in addition to real life situations and circumstances – she began to put her thoughts and feelings on paper. Overwhelmed with a need to express herself – also to simply entertain others – she continued to explore the newly found passion for literature. She fell head-over-heels in love with Urban Fiction, Thrillers, Suspense and Mystery novels. By the age of seventeen, she’d completed her very first novel; needless to say, she’s grown emotionally and mentally since then, bringing her writing full circle. She is determined to provide, for her readers, Urban Street Fiction at Its Best! There is absolute pleasure that comes from within Shan Marie, to bring characters to life that have the power to grab readers and pull them into their world. The joy that the art of writing brings her seems to have no end and pushes her to work hard, network and stay true to who she is as an author.

According to Wikipedia Urban fiction, also known as street lit, is a literary genre set, as the name implies, in a city landscape; however, the genre is as much defined by the socio-economic realities and culture of its characters as the urban setting. The tone for urban fiction is usually dark, focusing on the underside of city living. Profanity, sex, and violence are usually explicit, with the writer not shying away from or watering-down the material.

“This is gangsters, guns and drugs. I don't think it gets much scarier than this,'' said Assistant District Attorney Mary Ellen Karst in asking for the maximum prison term for Rumont TeKay, age 18, a high ranking member of a notorious street organization out of Chicago.
Like many of his peers, Rumont took to the street life at the impressionable age of 10 years old. After his initiation, he quickly climbed the ranks within the organization and became one of its largest distributors in the cocaine trade by age 18. Eight months after his eighteenth birthday, Rumont was convicted of the largest cocaine bust in the county’s history and received a minimum mandatory 35 year sentence, as a first time offender.
While his back was against the wall and hope was bleak, he found solace in the elements of another writer's storylines. His inspiration flared and Rumont TeKay put his mighty pen to paper and hasn’t let up since. Through it all, he has learned that hope never dies just as long as one breathes life into it. After six years of appeals and twelve years spent behind bars, Rumont has been released and is now on a mission to expose the atrocities dealt in the land he calls home.
