Acclaimed Travel Writer, Pico Iyer on the Art of Stillness

    in Self Help

Acclaimed travel writer Pico Iyer joins Sister Jenna on the America Meditating Radio Show!  Why might a lifelong traveler like Pico Iyer who has journeyed from Easter Island to Ethiopia, Cuba to Kathmandu, think that sitting quietly in a room might be the ultimate adventure? Because in our madly accelerating world, our lives are crowded, chaotic and noisy. There’s never been a greater need to slow down, tune out and give ourselves permission to be still.

Pico Iyer was born in England, to parents from India, and was educated at Eton, Oxford and Harvard. He began his career documenting a neglected aspect of travel -- the sometimes surreal disconnect between local tradition and imported global pop culture. He has written 12 books, exploring also the cultural consequences of isolation, whether writing about the exiled spiritual leaders of Tibet or the embargoed society of Cuba.

Pico’s latest focus is on another overlooked aspect of travel: how can it help us regain our sense of stillness and focus in a world where our devices and digital networks increasing distract us? He is also a contributor to many magazines, writer of screenplays and liner-notes and introductions to 40 other books. His newest book is, "The Art of Stillness." BYO Brilliance: The Brilliances of Stillness

    in Lifestyle

According to Laozi "Stillness reveals the secrets of eternity"

In this hecktic fact paced world of chaotic confusion, many of us find it hard to focus or think clearly. If most of us were honest with ourselves we'd admit that after the constant bombardment of this chaos we start to tune out and shut down our natural clear thinking.

Here's a wonderful talk by Eckhart Tolle on Embodying Stillness: A Guided Meditation

There is no wrong or right way to slip into stillness and what you do with that moment.

Some ideas to set up to connect with yourself in the stillness:

set up a table outside or in a room that is rarely used and put some candles or incense on the table.
find a comfortable position on the floor, couch, chair, or bed (if you have a nice cushiony grass yard maybe lay on your back under the night or day sky
    Close your eyes
Now take the time to allow the stillness to surround you and breathe it deeply within and slowly without
Take several long deep breaths exhaling slowly and allow your mind  to clear.

You can connect with your stillness any time of day or night and it can be any length of time. Whatever thoughts come let them come and let them slip away. What matters most will remain after you open your eyes.  Connect with your stillness and connect with you!

Sacred Stillness as Self-Care with Sonja Haller

    in Lifestyle

In a culture that encourages and expects BUSY as a constant state of being, many have lost touch with how to STOP and truly rest.... even for a moment. In this episode we'll explore sacred stillness as a concept and delve into how my guest, Sonja Haller is experimenting with her own practice of sacred stillness in her blog project: 52 SABBATHS.

In her words, "I want to feel comfortable in my own skin. I want to feel more peace. I want to feel less anxiety. I’ve always wanted these things and one night I had a dream in which that small, wise voice told me to take a Sabbath. The voice was that of my editor who would blush if I told him I dreamed of him.

I took it as a sign.

Now whether this secular girl can find any of that in her experiment to experience 52 Sabbaths with all the dedication mustered in an overstuffed life remains to be seen. But I’m forecasting that at the very least I will have found a deeper connection with something, someone or myself.

    Healing Through Stillness

    in Self Help

In our fast paced culture, it can be difficult to find a quiet moment alone to yourself. But when we deny ourselves the time for stillness, we also deny a part of us a way to heal.

Join me as I talk with health and wellness specialist Tamara Joy Patternson, MA about the healing power of stillness.

How you can find peace amidst the storms and “busyness” of life
How stillness is an essential foundation for healing, and the powerful benefits of regularly practicing stillness
How you can create a strong energy field within yourself, and how to know if there outside energies hindering your healing (and what to do if there are!)

Tamara Joy Patterson, MA has been  helping people to heal themselves spiritually, physically, and emotionally for 16 years. She is certified by the American College of Sports Medicine, and Psych-K Methodology. Her research emphasis is in understanding the mechanism behind chronic diseases/disabilities and emotional pain, and she holds degrees in Natural Health, Exercise Physiology, and Kinesiology.
