Where Art Thou: Moving From STEM To STEAM

    in Education

Where Art Thou?: Moving from STEM to STEAM

STEM is all the rage and rightly so. The skills our children need to learn regardless of their profession incorporate the skills that are taught in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics classes. With the emphasis on these studies one has to wonder what has become of a well-rounded liberal arts education. Schools in many cases have squeezed out fine and performing arts in order to make time for all STEM requirements. In the last five years however, many have come to understand, that arts incorporate complimentary processes to those addressed in STEM curricula. Things have started to heat up in moving from STEM to add the arts and move to STEAM.

In this show, we will explore how the arts are integrated into a STEM centered curriculum and provide a vision of how arts can be better integrated to provide learning opportunities for all students.

Join Host Michael Jay and ETT Guests ponder the following:

What are some examples of the process of moving from STEM to STEAM?
What benefits and trade offs are made in the process of incorporating arts into a STEM curriculum?
How prepared are educators to engage learners in learning activities that incorporate the arts?
What can publishers and curriculum developers do to incorporate more STEM into their arts curricula and/or more arts into their STEM curricula?

Deepertruth: The Eucharistic Miracle of Teresa Neumann 1898-1962

    in Religion

In the late 1950’s Therese began having heart troubles. As time when on, she began having mild attacks of the heart. On the day of her death, she received an rare grace, that of as a miraculous Communion, an event which usually happened only on high feastdays; the Host appeared on Therese's tongue, having been given her by Our Lord Himself. The time was 10:30 a.m. After the vision and the reception of Our Lord, Therese was fully conscious, and during an attack she was still able to ring for her sister Marie. Therese appeared to be very uncomfortable, and it was apparent that the death struggle was in progress. Marie was greatly alarmed and immediately called Father Naber. As he stepped into the room, Therese Neumann had already presented her holy soul to her dear Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Thus on September 18, 1962, one of the greatest mystics and stigmatists of our time passed to her eternal reward. The pastor of Konnersreuth at the time, Father Schumann, performed the Rite of Extreme Unction. No one in the room really believed that Therese was dead. She had died more than a hundred deaths in her lifetime, and many times everyone thought of her permanent passing from this earth. Candles were often lit on such occasions, because there was no pulse, no breathing or heartbeat; and she had often been pronounced dead by doctors. However, this time, after a period of hours had passed, they finally called in three doctors, who eventually pronounced her dead. - See more at: http://www.mysticsofthechurch.com/2009/12/therese-neumann-mystic-victim-soul.html#sthash.3udZwbwv.dpuf

Adapt or Die: Why Tech Isn't Just for Geeks Anymore

    in Education

Whether it's knowing how to write code, being articulate about the impact of technology on the 21st century economy, or ensuring today's students are versed in important STEAM (Science, Technology Engineering, Art, and Math) subjects and skillsets, it's long been clear that the days of geeks hiding in dark rooms and coding away from the rest of the world is an outdated notion.

Not only will the simplest coding languages help you understand and use the Web with its many games and apps, but many jobs use a computer. According to Code.org,  two-thirds of open computing jobs fall outside of the tech sector in fields such as journalism, finance, medicine, and entertainment. Understanding coding and technology can also offer a level of  mental exercise that helps you adapt to many different career options.

Charles Keating, president of West Sound Technology Association and president of his own technology consulting corporation, Keating Consulting Service, Inc., will join us and others in discussion about Hour of Code, technology, and the future.
