The iron lung was a tank respirator used to help people artificially breathe used often during the polio epedemic. It's use was usually only for several weeks until the lungs regained strength. For some like Jade's mother, it was for a lifetime. She lived 30 years on the iron lung. Jade's story is about a child's experience of interacting and loving a mother who was lived in an iron lung. Many on iron lungs were confined to institutions but Jade's father had the resources to keep her at home with all the necessary care. She even summered on Catalina Island with the family. What can any CEO or business owner -- or any manager -- learn from the Lean movement, and especially, the growing adoption of Lean by the healthcare industry? How can you cut costs, improve quality, and boost employee engagement and work satisfaction, all at once?
My guest is Mark Graban, author of Lean Hospitals and an expert on helping firms adop Lean thinking and Lean practices.
Mark has made Lean his career focus for nearly 20 years – starting with studying Dr. Deming’s work as an undergraduate engineering student at Northwestern University, then formally studying Lean in the classroom at Northwestern and as a master’s student at MIT, and then receiving extensive on-the-job mentoring and training.
Mark has led and participated in Lean transformations in manufacturing and healthcare organizations. His books include Lean Hospitals, Healthcare Kaizen, and more.
On this week's edition of HealthCare Consumerism Radio, the hosts welcome two special guests to the program for a discussion on health care payments, health engagement, life insurance, health incentives and more.
The first guest on the program will be Vineet Gulati, chief executive officer of HealthExpense. Similar to the shift from pension plans to individual retirement accounts years ago, employers are switching from defined benefit to a defined contribution that their employees control. Therefore, the employee-consumer today has to make more health insurance and health care purchasing decisions. This shift has been rapid, and consumers need to learn very quickly how to use vehicles like HSAs, FSAs and HRAs to cope with this expense-shift. In this interview, Vineet and the hosts will discuss what problems this shift is causing across the health care ecosystem and the innovations that are emerging to deal with these changes.
For the second segment on the show, the hosts will talk with Tal Gilbert, senior vice president of marketing and innovation for The Vitality Group. Tal and the hosts will be discussing an innovative new solution that brings together life insurance and wellness incentives. John Hancock Insurance recently launched a new approach to life insurance in the U.S. that rewards people for healthy living. Developed through an exclusive, first-ever life insurance partnership with The Vitality Group, the new solution integrates life insurance with a comprehensive healthy living program.
