We journey to the island of St. Vincent to explore ancient places and the history of a proud people few know anything about. Our first stop is to the Botanical Gardens of St. Vincent, the oldest such garden of its type in the Western Hemisphere, and we are joined by historian Dr. Edgar Adams for a look into some of the events and experiences that have defined his life and the history of St. Vincent. Then we travel to Fort Charlotte where we meet Augustine Sutherland, a decendant of one of St. Vincent's indigeneous ethnic groups, the Garafuna. Fort Charlotte was built by the British (1793-1806), not to defend against a naval attack but as an inland defense against attacks from the Garafuna, Kalinago and the French. This in evidenced by the fact that the cannons of Fort Charlotte face inland. Augustine shares some of the tragic history his ancestors faced here and some of the challenges he faced growing up as a Garafuna on St. Vincent.
Lonnie Wheeler explores the intangible qualities with which certain players make other players better. These PEQs—Performance Enhancing Qualities—have been swept aside by the explosion of statistical analysis in baseball. Now, with the help of countless players, managers, and baseball executives, Wheeler draws on a lifetime of observation to demonstrate that playing the game the right way does indeed have its rewards.
A veteran sportswriter’s refreshing ode to the little things that, as Joe Torre once put it, represent baseball’s heartbeat, INTANGIBALL is not designed to debunk Moneyball, but rather to sketch in what it left out. Wheeler thoroughly examines the human dynamics of baseball by exploring how culture changes on the Cincinnati Reds following the departures of star players Ken Griffey Jr. and Adam Dunn enabled the team to snap out of its losing ways. Making the case for teams that transcend statistics because of their deference to values, he introduces the concept of “teamship” and identifies it in such successful organizations as the Atlanta Braves, New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Ray, and recent World Champions St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants. Wheeler traces this team-first philosophy from legendary figures such as Hall-of-Famer Branch Rickey to contemporary managers such as Joe Maddon and ballplayers such as Scott Rolen and future Hall-of-Famer Derek Jeter.

Standing on the edge of summer it’s easy to look off the cliff and see into the dark dismal valley of winter. I hate winter. Still, the holidays that come along with it make it bearable. Then of course there is hunting. I am no seasoned hunter though I am so prepared for this season it’s crazy. Hunting, to me, is about a culmination of skills and having a reason to practice those skills in real this me with a real opponent. Hunting is about filling a freezer with good clean meat not raised in factory farms.

Epiphytes are plants that grows harmlessly upon another plant (such as a tree) and derives its moisture and nutrients from the air, rain, and sometimes from debris accumulating around it. Epiphytes differ from parasites in that epiphytes grow on other plants for physical support and do not necessarily negatively affect the host. Epiphytes are usually found in the temperate zone or in the tropics. The term epiphytic derives from the Greek epi- (meaning ‘upon’) and phyton (meaning ‘plant’). Epiphytic plants are sometimes called “air plants” because they do not root in soil. However there are many aquatic species of algae such as seaweeds that are epiphytes on other aquatic plants

We cannot apologize enough to you, our listeners for last week’s technical difficulties. Even though it was not something that we could control, we still feel responsible for not having a plan B or plan C in the event that something like that ever happened. This taught us a lesson though, and we are working to initiate a plan B and a plan C to prevent further interruptions of the show.
This week: “Let’s Go Back To Our ROOTS!” I can remember all of the things of the past, 40, 50 years or so ago that we used as a culture that really worked well. Then, capitalism, and manufacturers came along and told us that those things that we were using were not the best to use. So we began using the manufactured products, of many sorts pertaining to our health, hygiene, house cleaning and more. Let’s re-visit those things and see if we can start to use them again.

St. Zita was born into a poor but holy Christian family. Her older sister became a Cistercian nun and her uncle Graziano was a hermit whom the local people regarded as a saint. Zita herself always tried to do God's will obediently whenever it was pointed out to her by her mother. At the age of twelve Zita became a housekeeper in the house of a rich weaver in Lucca, Italy, eight miles from her home at Monte Sagrati. As things turned out, she stayed with that family for the last forty-eight years of her life. She found time every day to attend Mass and to recite many prayers, as well as to carry out her household duties so perfectly that the other servants were jealous of her. Indeed, her work was part of her religion! She use to say: "a servant is not holy if she is not busy; lazy people of our position is fake holiness." At first, her employers were upset by her generous gifts of food to the poor, but in time, they were completely won over by her patience and goodness and she became a very close friend. St. Zita was given a free reign over her working schedule and busied herself with visits to the sick and those in prison. Word spread rapidly in Lucca of her good deeds and the heavenly visions that appeared to her. She was sought out by the important people, and at her death in 1278 the people acclaimed her as a saint. She is the patroness of domestic workers. Her feast day is April 27.
In the latest edition of the Encouragement Group, host David Gerber discusses the frequent commercial tag line "Past Performance Does Not Guarantee Future Results." Often times people enter into treatment thinking that because they have been unsuccessful in the past, that they have no hope for a future. This investment commercial tagline can work in reverse in treatment and recovery. Our present and future can in fact be better-our past does not define us. We just have to be willing to do the work. Listen in as miracles will be shared.
