Wednesday Night Tailgate: Wild Card Weekend

    in Sports

Twelve teams remain in the quest for the Vince Lombardi Trophy. The road to Santa Clara begins Saturday.

The AFC plays both games on Saturday. Kansas City puts its 10-game win streak on the line against the AFC South champion Houston Texans. Can the winner of this game get all the way to Super Bowl 50? How good is Kansas City?

Cincinnati and Pittsburgh could be the two best teams in the entire AFC. Can the Bengals finally win a playoff game? Are the Steelers ready for another run at the Super Bowl?

The NFC kicks off on Sunday. The Minnesota Vikings lost to the Seattle Seahawks 38-7 the last time they met in Minneapolis. Are the Vikings that much better? Do the Seahawks have enough left in the tank for a run at a third consecutive Super Bowl?

The final game this weekend pits Green Bay and Washington against each other. Have the injuries finally caught up to the Packers? Can the Redskins get up for another big home game against a quality opponent?

Find out my take on the first weekend of the NFL playoffs on the KD's Sports Arena podcast and call in with your opinions on Wednesday Night Tailgate.

Green Bay Packers report card 2015 - Linebackers

    in Sports

The Green Bay Packers had a defense that allowed some yards but found a way to create turnovers and keep opponents out of the end zone. Unfortunately, this Packers defense will be remembered for the breakdown in overtime against Arizona, in the NFC Divisional playoff round. That breakdown led to a first and goal and eventual touchdown by Larry Fitzgerald.

Statistically, the Packers finished 15th in total yards and 12th in points allowed. Julius Peppers found enough gas to have another productive year leading the Packers with 10.5 sacks. As a unit, the Packers tied for seventh in sacks with 43. Clay Matthews was asked to man the middle of the defensive, and still produced 6.5 sacks. Middle linebacker became and issue once again when Sam Barrington went down with injury. Jake Ryan, a fourth round pick, worked his way into the starting lineup.

Green Bay Packers report card 2015 - Wide Receivers and Tight Ends

    in Sports

The Green Bay Packers entered the season with high expectations, and the wide receiver corp was one of the strengths. However, Jordy Nelson tore his ACL, in the preseason. This meant that someone would need to step up and take over the role as the go to guy. The logical choice was Randall Cobb, but early in the season it was Aaron Rodgers looking for James Jones. Jones picked up were he left off before leaving in free agency. As the season went on, Jones cooled off and was not much of an impact in the playoffs. DeVante Adams entered his second year with high expectations after a spectacular post-season in 2014. He was riddled by nagging injuries and ended the  year with 50 catches, but only one touchdown. After re-signing with the Packers, Randall Cobb was suppose to be a perfect compliment to Nelson. With Nelson gone, Cobb struggled to get open and never got on the same page with Rodgers. Cobb ended the season as the top receiver with 79 catches for 829 yards. The Packers drafted Ty Montgomery and as he saw his role increase his season ended with injury. Montgomery put in the work in practice and was earning praise from the veteran Nelson. Jared Abbrederis and Jeff Janis had a hard time finding the field but were forced into action during the playoffs due to numerous injuries.

Andrew Quarless and Richard Rodgers were the top two tight ends. Rodgers may have saved the season with his hail mary catch, but did not give the Packers a dominant presence at tight end. He finished the year with a modest 58 catches and tied Jones for the team lead with eight touchdowns. Quarless had his season end early due to injury.

Green Bay Packers report card 2015 - Offensive Line

    in Sports

The last time Aaron Rodgers had lower than a 100 passer rating was his first year as a starter. The offensive line started the season with little depth, and could not afford any long term injuries. The starting five brought a veteran presence to the line, but the depth at this position was limited. Offensively, the Packers statistics were awful. A high powered offense had a quarterback with under a 100 rating, a running back that did not surpass 1,000 yards, and no receiver with over a 1,000 yards or 80 catches.

You can not blame the offense line for all of the offensive problems, but inconsistent play can lead to a lack of a running game. Without a running game their is more pressure on the quarterback.
