My guest today is Arlene Kaplan. Arlene Kaplan has a Masters in Human Resources/Organization Development from the University of San Francisco and a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Dance Performance from Ohio State University. She is a Senior Birkman Consultant and has a Senior Human Resources Professional (SPHR) designation.
Her 20+ years as a Human Resources professional with a specialty in Employee Relations provides her with diverse experience solving people problems such as: resolving conflict, improving communication, building teams, career development and executive coaching. For the past 10 years she has used the Birkman Method, an online personality assessment, to help her clients understand and appreciate themselves to find career solutions and resolve conflict. She has also used the Birkman Method to help a hiring managers understand potential candidates to see if they are the right fit.
Prior to her corporate career, she taught dance in Osaka, Japan. Her experience in Japan taught her that one can’t get “enlightenment” by sitting at a famous rock garden for an entire day, waiting for something to happen. (She actually did this. Spent an entire day sitting by a famous rock garden in Kyoto) Nothing happens when you sit and wait. In fact, gaining the ability to navigate and succeed with life takes an enormous amount of work. Understanding your strengths, motivations, interests and stress behaviors provided by the Birkman Method, goes a long way on the journey to fulfillment.
For 25+ years Arlene has been and continues to be, a student of Arnold Siegel’s “Autonomy and Life” coursework. This private curriculum study is the overarching foundation of her understanding of the human condition and has taught her that to a large extent, fulfillment lies in our ability to fully blossom and find our place in the world.

Join us today on Women Leading the Way Radio as Cecile Bereal, your host of Serving Up Diversity, interviews C.J. Westrick, Owner of HR Jungle.
Ms. C.J. Westrick, SPHR is a certified human resources professional who has been in human resources management for over 20 years. She started HR Jungle, her consulting firm, 7 years ago and specializes in working with small to mid-sized businesses who don’t need full-time HR staff but want senior-level expertise.
Wage and hour workplace issues have been prevalent for many years, and still plague employers and employees today. Who is exempt? Who is non-exempt? When is paying overtime a requirement? Large employers find ways to handle the issues. Small and mid-sized companies have no safe harbor as there is no "small employer exemption" to most state or federal wage and hour laws. Our guest today works primarily with small-mid sized businesses, and will share with us how wage and hour apply to them.

The TalentCulture #TChat Show is back live on Wednesday, June 4, 2014, from 6:30-7:00 pm ET for radio, 7:00-8:00 pm ET for the Twitter chat.
Last week we talked about how to visualize real-time talent alignment, and this week we’re talking about how to have a transformative onboarding experience for new hires.
According to the Talent Board’s 2013 Candidate Experience Awards report, based on data from nearly 50,000 candidates from over 90 progressive companies, new hires are sometimes met with less-than-ideal onboarding processes. They’re usually bombarded with disparate paperwork on the first day, as well as left with many questions about everything from benefits to job responsibilities.
Nobody wants to do their “day 1” paperwork from a cold, dark office. They want to do it from the comfort of wherever that comfort derives. They want to get on with the cultural immersion — and get to work.
A good onboarding experience is crucial to the success of every new employee, and a happy candidate experience makes for exceptional hires and happy customers.
Join #TChat co-creators and hosts Meghan M. Biro and Kevin W. Grossman as we learn how to have a transformative onboarding experience with this week’s guests: Todd Owens, President & COO at TalentWise; and Wendy Matyjevich, SPHR, Managing Partner of Human Capital for BlackRain Partners.
Thank you to our sponsors and partners: RIVS, GreatRated of Great Place to Work, TalentWise, GloboForce, SAP/SuccessFactors, PeopleFluent, Red Branch Media and HRmarketer Insight.
