CT Women's Basketball Hall of Fame Inductee Charlene M. Taylor

    in Sports

The Total Tutor Neil Haley and Coach Karen Hall will interview CT Women's Basketball Hall of Fame Inductee Charlene M. Taylor.

Charlene Taylor played basketball at Beaver Falls (PA) High School, where she played point guard and averaged 15 points per game. In her senior year (1985), Taylor helped her team to a 25-1 record, and both the conference and state championship titles. Taylor was named the conference MVP, was a member of the “Terrific Twenty” (top twenty girl basketball players in Pennsylvania), received the high school’s “Carolyn Clark Girls’ Sports Award” and earned a scholarship to the University of New Haven.

Taylor had an astounding athletic career at the University of New Haven from 1985-1989. During that time, New Haven won four NECC titles, two Division II New England Regional Championships, and a National Championship enroute to a 102-22 record.

During her career, Taylor scored 1,853 points with an average of 17 points per game, and tallied 603 assists, 419 steals, and 458 rebounds. She was named UNH Female Athlete of the Year twice, Kodak All-District twice, and in 1987, she was named to the Division II All-Tournament Team. Taylor was a three-time All-NECC First Team selection, and a 1989 NCAA New England All Region Squad selection. In 1989, she was a Kodak All-American, ECAC Player of the Year, and NECC Player of the Year. In 1996, Taylor was inducted into the UNH Hall of Fame.

Taylor’s name appears at or near the top of several categories in the Charger’s record book: #1 career assists (603), #1 career steals (419), #2 career points (1,853), #2 most steals in a sea-son (134), #3 most points in a season (557), #9 most 3-pointers in a season (35), and #2 most assists in a season (175).

Brett Favre makes NFL Hall of Fame on first ballot and heads the class of 2016

    in Sports

Brett Favre leads the NFL Hall of Fame class for 2016. Favre was voted in on the first ballot, and becomes the 24th Green Bay Packer to be selected. The Chicago Bears lead all teams with 27 players enshrined. The class of 2016 will enshrine eight people that includes one owner, one coach, two quarterbacks (including Favre), a wide receiver, two offensive lineman, and one defensive player.

The late Ken Stabler joins Favre at the quarterback position. Stabler known as the "Snake" passed away last July from cancer. He led the Oakland Raiders to the Lombardi Trophy in 1977. Owner Edward DeBartolo Jr will also be enshrined for his contributions to the NFL. Tony Dungy became the first African-American to win a Super Bowl. Marvin Harrison still holds the single season reception record of 143 and was a member of Dungy's Super Bowl winning team. Orlando Pace was a giant among men on the offensive line and is joined by the late Dick Stanfel who played for the Detroit Lions. With Stanfel being elected to the Hall of Fame, Packer fans may be shaking their head wondering why the great Jerry Kramer still has not received his validation. Finally, the lone defensive player elected was Kevin Greene. Greene recorded 160 sacks while playing for four teams. He started his career in 1985 with the Los Angeles Rams and ended his 15 year career in Carolina.

    in Sports

Happy New Year, Metsian Folk! The Rising Apple Report returns for its 1st episode of 2016! Brooklyn Trolley Blogger Mike Lecolant hosts, with site editor Danny Abriano and writer Rich Sparago joining them for all the piping hot Mets talk! Joining them as well will be long-time friend of Rising Apple and blogger Metstradamus, Mr. John Coppinger.

Well, after 4 years of waiting, it finally happened: Mike Piazza, the greatest hitting catcher of all time, has been elected to the baseball Hall of Fame! AND as expected, he will don a Mets cap on his plaque. We'll discuss his career, our favorite memories, and what this means for the era of the 90's and 00's overall in future HOF voting.

Most fans have wished for a more active offseason following a pennant-winning year, but that has not occurred. Whether it's the debt the Wilpons are still living under, Sandy Alderson's reluctance to dole out long-term 2nd generation contracts, or both, we'll discuss the offseason so far, as well as options the Mets should still be considering, whether realistic they will pursue them or not.

So, join us at 6:30pm ET for the latest edition of the Rising Apple Report!
