From Nigeria to the NFL with Samkon Gado on Christian Devotions Speak UP

    in Football

Join us this week on Christian Devotions SPEAK UP! as Scott discusses overcoming trials with former NFL running back Samkon Gado.

Samkon Gado was born in Kufai, Taraba State, Nigeria. He moved to the United States with his family when he was nine years old. Samkon overcame many obstacles in his life—family turmoil, school bullying, and injuries—before football became the outlet in which he excelled.

The “Nigerian Nightmare” set high school records for rushing yards, prompting scholarship offers to attend Liberty College. He found his place on the team, amassing touchdowns which caught the eye of NFL scouts. Gado signed with the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in 2005. Hampered by injuries and a full roster of players at his position, he was cut and quickly picked up by the Green Bay Packers. Samkon made the most of this opportunity and posted impressive statistics in his rookie campaign. But once again, the injury bug struck and he spent the next five years bouncing from team to team before retiring after the 2010 season.

Samkon went back to school at the Medical University of South Carolina where he works toward becoming an ENT (ear/nose/throat) specialist.

Twila Paris Shares Success Through Christ on Christian Devotions Speak UP!

    in Christianity

Join us this week on Christian Devotions SPEAK UP! when Scott McCausey talks music with Christian performing legend, Twila Paris.

Devotion to God runs deep in the Paris family. Twila’s great-grandparents were itinerant preachers in Arkansas and Oklahoma who held outdoor revival meetings and established churches, and she recounted this experience in Seventy Years Ago, a song on her Beyond a Dream album. Musical talent permeates the Paris family, as her grandmother wrote songs distributed at revivals. Her father, Oren Paris, is a minister as well as an accomplished musician and songwriter.

Twila sang at church before she was old enough to attend school. She began developing her instrumental talent at the age of six when she started taking piano lessons. By the time she was performing in her high school choir, Twila was determined to become a choir teacher. She began to consider songwriting after attending a Christian discipleship school, where she decided that music would be the perfect way to express her feelings about God.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Twila toured extensively as she opened for the Imperials. After receiving her first #1 hit, she began headlining her own concert tours with such notable opening artists as Wayne Watson, Clay Crosse, Phil Kaeggy, Avalon, Aaron Jeoffrey, and Fernando Ortega. She was featured in the Young Messiah tour and co-hosted with Steven Curtis Chapman. In the 2000s, she continues to tour but not as extensively. In 2011-2012, Twila participated in the Christian Classics tour with Steve Green, Wayne Watson, and Michael Card.

Drug Addict to Christ Follower with Jenny Reese Clark on CD Speak UP!

    in Christianity

Join us this week on Christian Devotions SPEAK UP! as Scott discusses kicking the drug addiction with author Jenny Reese Clark.

Jenny Reese Clark is a living testimony of what true faith in Jesus Christ can bring.  As a multiple felon of various drug charges, including Unlawful Manufacturing of Methamphetamines, Jenny is no stranger to breaking the rules and suffering the consequences.

In April of 2010, Jenny’s life hit an all-time low as she turned her back on the home burning behind her. As a result of a chemical interaction, the clandestine laboratory that she brought secretly into her sister’s home, exploded. As she took off, shoeless, she ran as far as she could to escape the consequences. With her sister’s pet dead inside and her relationships destroyed through her own betrayals, Jenny woke up as a Jane Doe on a ventilator in an ICU twenty-four hours later—knowing there was no way to come back from such destruction.

It wasn’t until Jenny went to prison on a fifteen year sentence and lost every relationship, possession, and privilege she ever had that she began to honestly understand her true need and dependency upon the Lord. She returned to her roots and picked up her biblical studies, this time clinging to every word … knowing it meant her life or death.

In her book, Field of Influence, you will see this passion unfold. It’s an extremely insightful look into the forbidden realm of drug addiction.
