Black Thoughts and Theory: The Radio Show-How Do You Discipline Your Children?

    in Culture

Do you believe in spanking your child or are you a time-out kind of parent? Is it okay to discipline your child in public or should you wait till you get home? How far is too far?

Join Asha Zuri? and Alex Primo? Thursday at 9 pm EST as we explore parenting and discipline in the Black community. Do we spank too much or are we too relaxed in the discipline department? What do we need to do to get our children straight?

Here's some opinions courtesy of the Huffington Post to get things started:

"I still believe 'spare the rod, spoil the child!' Know your child and what 'works' with him/her." -- Yolanda C.
"I'm not going to let the justice system reprimand my child, I'll do it myself, thank you very much." -- Pas Jb
"Stop the violence!" -- Roxy N. Melody D.
"There's a difference between a beating and a whoopin! I whooped my kids, I never beat them. And I'd do it again!" -- Margo M.
"When did the 'rod' become a belt or switch? Oh, during slavery when blacks were beat with whips. As we have progressed in society, we know more, and can understand child development better." -- Timmie J. W. Jr.
"Was Dr. King beaten? What did he become? Was he a peaceful man or was he angry?" -- Samuel S.

You are in this World but NOT of this World!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    in Prayer

Don’t let the devil talk you into being an earth dweller any longer.  You are seated with Me in heavenly places at the right Hand of Majesty.  Sit with Me and rest in My Everlasting Arms until your enemies are made your footstool.“What then shall we say to these things?  If God is for us, who is against us?  He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him FREELY GIVE US ALL THINGS,”   Romans 8:31.“As for the rich in this world, charge them not to be proud and arrogant and contemptuous of others, nor to set their hopes on uncertain riches, but on God, Who richly and ceaselessly provides us with everything for our enjoyment,”   1 Timothy 6:17.

Willie Nile; If I Was A River.. New Music and Tour!

    in Entertainment

In his three and a half decades as a recording artist, Willie Nile has earned a reputation as both a fiercely committed rock ’n’ roller and a singularly insightful songwriter. It’s Nile’s introspective side that fuels If I Was A River, a deeply compelling ten-song collection that diverges from his usual sound, while affirming the remarkable melodic and lyrical skills that have long endeared the artist to his passionately loyal fan base.Working with Grammy-winning producer Stewart Lerman (Boardwalk Empire, Antony and the Johnsons, Loudon Wainwright III, Dar Williams) Nile recorded the material in an appropriately spare environment that helped to capture the songs’ intimacy and immediacy. He also employed the same Steinway Grand piano that he'd played 34 years earlier on the evening of the death of John Lennon, while both Lennon and Nile were recording at Manhattan’s Record Plant. When Nile was working on If I Was A River, the legendary piano was residing at Hobo Sound in Weehawken, NJ, where he recorded the new album with a minimum of embellishment or trickery.  If I Was A River also features some contributions from guitar master Steuart Smith (of Eagles/Rosanne Cash/Rodney Crowell fame) and multi-instrumental stringmaster David Mansfield (whose voluminous credits range from Bob Dylan to Johnny Cash to Yo La Tengo), along with backing vocals from singer-songwriter and frequent Nile co-writer Frankie Lee.It’s hard to think of many other artists who are doing some of their best work in the fourth decade of their careers, but Willie Nile continues to seek out new creative challenges and conquer new musical territory.“Doing this album was liberating in many ways,” he states. “I learned that it’s fun to change horses and take different roads from time to time as one travels through life, and I think I'll carry that lesson with me in the records that I make in the future.?
