Voices of South Africa with Don

    in Politics Conservative

They say by middle age you should have settled down and have gone around the block a few times, repeating the same year every year. For me it has been more a case of getting up on the block and falling off it or finding another one again and again and thus having 30 different years over the past 3 decades. This has given me a unique insight.

Born in Benoni near Johannesburg back in the 60’s my mother, a single parent with 3 boys, was hard at work finding a replacement father, while we were fed by family, friends and church. We brought ourselves up playing in the fields, streets and dams of the greater residential area, something you could do quite safely then. Although Afrikaans, we were sent to English school which was walking distance as there was no money for bus fare to the Afrikaans school. In those days of Eurocentricity it was considered a wise thing by some.

I discovered what steak was at age 14 when my Mother remarried, and saw TV for the first time as television was introduced into SA despite Apartheid’s best efforts. We moved to the Cape and after high school, I had to do my compulsory military service as there was no money for further studies.  University was not free in Apartheid SA and cost the price of a house then.

Like most of us, the two years in the army was bittersweet. You’re glad you had the experience but would have preferred not to even though you knew it was good for you. I spent three quarters of it up on the border (South West Africa and Angola), driving tanker trucks with aviation fuel and diesel to wherever the helicopters and tanks needed them.

Back in civvy street the only choice was to get a job to pay rent and buy food. There was no safety net or grants in Apartheid SA. By age 23 I was awarded a Singer Franchise which was shortlived as the local monopoly supermarket chain decided to enter that market too and I became another small business destroyed by big business.

World Footprints revisits South Africa to explore the country that Nelson Mandela built. Our journey will take us through the world of fine art and will focus on the transformative power of art with Martin Britz, President and Founder of Soweto Fine Art, will join us from Johannesburg to talk about his personal journey from an Afrikaner military officer to a champion for black South African artists. Martin will share some unique insights into the people, culture, and South African society today; and he’ll talk about his quest to promote and empower the diverse people on the African continent and expose its art treasures to the world. Then we’ll travel back to Maryland for a visit to Galerie Myrtis to chat with several prominent art collectors who gathered to discuss the topics of cultural preservation through art collecting, connoisseurship and philanthropy. Based in Baltimore, Galerie Myrtis features works by African, African-American and emerging artists with a mission to utilize the visual arts to raise awareness for artists who deserve recognition for their contributions in artistically portraying our historic and cultural landscape; and recognize art movements that paved the way for freedom of artistic expression.

South Africa Series Presents - Jack Sen

    in Culture

On Saturday 13th June at 2 pm CT - 9 pm SA time - Don Deon will interview Jack Sen.

Jack Sen, UKIP’s parliamentary candidate for West Lancashire, has claimed that other governments have ignored “the ethnic cleansing” of people of European descent in South Africa.

When asked in the interview whether the “white South African” was under attack, Sen said this group had become “an endangered species”.

“It is being systemically hunted into extinction by a people we were told wanted to live in democratic harmony back in 1994,” the UKIP candidate said.

“Remember the Rainbow Nation propaganda campaign? Hard to reach that lofty ideal when people are being gunned down for sport from Joburg [Johannesburg] to Capetown. It’s still hunting season from what I can see.”

Sen added that the international community has “[ignored] the ethnic cleansing of the South African of European origin”.

Radio Free South Africa Presents - Dan Roodt CEO of PRAAG.org

    in Current Events

On Wednesday 29th August at 1 pm CT (8pm SA time) we have invited Dan Roodt to be our guest as he was unable to get on air on Saturday

Dan Roodt is an Afrikaner author and intellectual who also worked for some time in the financial markets. He was born in the late fifties in Springs, a city just east of Johannesburg where he also went to primary school. He has spent most of his adult life in Johannesburg, apart from a stint in Paris where he learnt French and became in his own words, "more Europeanised than most South Africans, although my roots are in Africa, in our wonderful sunny country which has been so manhandled these past few decades".

He holds a PhD in Afrikaans language and literature, but also comments regularly in the media and on the website praag.org on South African politics and society. In 2005 he published a popular book critical of the current South African government called The Scourge of the ANC. More recently he has written on South Africa's English identity, as well as penning a preface to the South African edition of Jared Taylor's White Identity: Racial Consciousness in the 21st Century. Most of his books are available on praag.org.
