LOTL The Comfort Zone Presents Jackiem Joyner. Debuts new album " EVOLVE "

    in Entertainment

Juxtaposing invigorating otherworldly sonicscapes under tender sax melodies, “Evolve” is a dynamic, highly-rhythmic session that is unpredictable laced with traces of the familiar. Listening will take you to a different place while defining Joyner as a musician and a writer beyond what we have already heard from the chart-topping rhythm and groove guy. The imaginative new set has a greater purpose with the introductory single, “Generation Next,” serving as “a declaration that the next generation of jazz musicians is here to stay. Music evolves, including jazz. All types of sound evolve. So do people and our imaginations. That is what I tried to put on tape. ‘Evolve’ captures the changes in my musical mind and how I have evolved as an artist. Rather than fitting in with the traditional, I’m bringing the audience along with songs that unfold over different and interesting soundscapes even as I move towards a live organic sound,” explains Joyner.

In addition to playing alto and soprano sax on the record, Joyner is a multi-instrumentalist who played many of the instruments heard on the collection along with a couple of high-profile assists from Grammy-nominated sax player Gerald Albright and internationally-renowned keyboardist Keiko Matsui. The collaborations are noteworthy for different reasons. When Joyner was in high school, Albright was his idol thus dueting with him on “Big Step” was a thrill. Joyner tours in Matsui’s band when not performing his own dates and wrote “Europa” with her mind. On a few tracks, he was joined by his touring band – guitarist Kayta Matsuno, bassist Tim Bailey, keyboardist Bill Steinway and drummer Raymond Johnson – to record live in the studio.

My guest this Sunday April 6 is author Anne Kaufmann. Anne is stopping by the show as part of her Write Now Literary virtual book tour  to 'chat' with me about her new book, Glenn Gould: Sketches of Solitude.

    About the book:

In GLEN GOULD: SKETCHES OF SOLITUDE writer Anne Kaufmann gives us an imaginative glimpse into the world and soundscapes of Canadian icon and music legend, Glenn Gould. It is a series of vignettes or “sketches” of Gould’s life based on his own recollections over the years and those of others who knew him. Artist Rudin Koci perfectly augments the poetic prose with his colorful, bold and energetic illustrations. This book will inspire young people of today to nurture their own creativity through art and music.

Anne Kaufmann is a former teacher librarian. She studied English Literature at Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Toronto. Her passions include music, books, animals and creating nature journals. She has shared her life with dogs, horses, cats and birds. A nature lover, she spends many hours exploring the forests north of her home with her Border Collie, Indy. Some of her favorite childhood memories include summers at her cottage on Lake Simcoe, settling back on the family couch reading while listening to her dad’s weekly String Quartet group, playing with her dogs and wishing for a horse. She lives in Ontario, Canada.

The Spectacular Sound of Andy Pickford & Jay Hunter Morris

    in Entertainment

Andy Pickford’s musical associations began at the age of four emulating tunes on his grandmother’s piano. Hearing synthesizer music fired Andy’s imagination. In 1981, Andy got his first monophonic synthesizer. Coupled up with a cassette deck and a reel-to-reel, Andy started composing synth music. Around 1983, Andy set about recording a cassette album called Linear Functions under the name of Kris McKuen.

In 1992 a demo of Andy’s work was sent to Ashley Franklin at BBC Radio Derby where he got his first break on the now legendary ‘Soundscapes’ programme. Early 1993, Replicant began. This album, dedicated to the artist Ian Mullis who was responsible for the original Linear Functions album sleeve,

Andy has collaborated with the likes of Ian Boddy, Asana and Paul Nagle under the pseudonym Binar and Spank, The Dark Monkey. He has now decided to throw himself back into his music again with re-mastered album material, plus re-releases of both Xenomorph and Nemesis.

Opera singer, Grammy Winner and Author, Jay Hunter Morris came into the national spotlight when he created the role of Tony in Terrence McNally’s celebrated play Master Class  In a career spanning twenty-five years, some of his favourite Operatic roles have included Rodolfo, Alfredo, Pinkerton, Calaf, Cavaradossi, Des Grieux, Canio, Stolzing, Erik, Bacchus, Florestan, Don Jose, Steva, and Samson.
Morris has most recently been seen on PBS as a very different kind of hero in the role of Captain Ahab in Jake Heggie’s Moby-Dick from the San Francisco Opera. A contemporary opera veteran of great renown, Morris has been heard in several world premiere productions He will create the role of Teague in Cold Mountain (Higdon) which premieres with a major US Festival in 2015.

In 2013, Opera Lively published his first book Diary of a Redneck Opera Zinger
