It's that time of year again...the students are back, and the problems that were unsolved at the end of last school year are probably still unsolved now (except in British Columbia, where school hasn't started yet due to mitigating circumstances). Today's program focused on assumptions about why students have difficulty meeting expectations, and whether we should start by assuming that they really can meet those expectations or immediately leap into solving problems collaboratively to find out why they're not. An omen of programs to come...
Our callers made this a very poignant program. The first was a dad who's been using the CPS model for some time now. He had some very encouraging news about his son. The second was a mom who's just at the beginning of her CPS journey. And the third was a mom who's in the middle of her journey and needing to make some slight adjustments. Beware: due to circumstances beyond our comprehension, the program cuts off unexpectedly near the end.
In this inaugural edition of Collaborative Problem Solving at Home, Dr. Greene describes how challenging kids come to be challenging: they're lacking the skills not to be challenging. This perspective represents a dramatic departure from viewing challenging kids as manipulative, attention-seeking, unmotivated, coercive, and limit-testing. Dr. Greene also describes how to go about figuring out what skills your kid is lacking, through use of the Assessment of Lagging Skills and Unsolved Problems (ALSUP). He discusses the fact that challenging behavior occurs under highly predictable conditions, called "unsolved problems," and describes how to go about identifying these unsolved problems in your child. A great introduction to Collaborative Problem Solving for parents!
Well, Parenting Your Challenging Child is back on the air for another nine months, and Dr. Greene and his new co-host, Susy, kicked things off by responding to emails from several parents and a parent who called in...all seeking guidance on how to apply the CPS model to their challenging kids. Key theme of the day: though challenging behavior is very concerning and stressful, it's really just a very unpleasant way for a child to communicate that he or she is lacking the skills to handle certain demands and expectations.
Parents of behaviorally challenging kids are often told that they need to be stronger, firmer, and more consistent...and yet, as discussed on today's Parents Panel, solving problems collaboratively takes a lot of strength too...and parents seem to feel a lot stronger when they know how to solve problems together with their children.

Cultural Diversity and Business Leadership - Part 1
September 20, 2014 – Round Table
Diversity refers to the differences in people: age, gender, race, religion, culture and economic upbringing.
Formal cross-cultural awareness training is very helpful for problem solving on multicultural business teams.
The positive influence of cultural diversity facilitates members of the organization to build relationships and acknowledge each other regardless of their differences of origin and background.
The growing cultural diversity in the Global economy presents some potential for conflict in the workplace if not handled appropriately.

Hi, My name is Richie Jewell. I'm 22 years old and I have autism since being diagnosed at the age of 2 1/2.
Currently, i work at a local library in Beacon, NY to get some money. Outside of that, I'm a writer, motivational speaker and world/autism advocate to reach out people and raise their spirits. As of right now, I'm writing a book now titled This is Me: Life with Autism, which discusses my struggles and triumphs with my disability throughout my life. I do speeches at public places such as schools and libraries to raise awareness of autism, world problems and my struggles with my disability. Every day, there will be new challenges that are gonna confront me but I will get stronger and more confident as I conquered them. I always live by a quote made by Jim Henson. And i quote: "Life is meant to be fun, joyous, and fulfilling. May each of yours be that - having each of you as a child of mine has certainly been one of the good things in my life. Know that I've always loved each of you with an eternal, bottomless love. A love that has nothing to do with each other, for I feel my love for each of you is total and all-encompassing. Please watch out for each other and love and forgive everybody. It’s a good life, enjoy it." In order to be successful, i could try give the best advice which follows: Reach into your heart and soul to discover your talent. Sometimes, people's talents fade away and you lose something special so, hold on to it. If your talent or idea helps you, then let it set you free from the obstacles that are currently destroying your spirit. Follow your dreams and heart by listening to that “whisper” inside your head speaking to you. If you listen to it, you'll go somewhere.
