Brian Solis is a digital analyst, anthropologist, and also a futurist. In his work at Altimeter Group, Solis studies the effects of disruptive technology on business and society. More so, he humanizes technology’s causal effect to help people see people differently and understand what to do about it. Brian has released a string of books for business that challenge and push the envelope on helping businesses understand consumer behavior... and his latest book is an example of what it takes.
X: The Experience Where Business Meets Design
"This isn’t your ordinary business book. The idea of a book was re-imagined for a digital meets analog world to be a relevant and sensational experience. Its aesthetic was meant to evoke emotion while also giving new perspective and insights to help you win the hearts and minds of your customers. And, the design of this book, along with what fills its pages, was done using the principles shared within."
Brian took time out of his business schedule as author, speaker, analyst and consultant to share with us his vision for this book and why it required 3.5 years from idea to execution. It's a fascinating conversation where Brian helps explain where we've been, where we are, and why businesses need to yield his advice on where to go next.

Carol’s journey began at a very early age. She might not have realized it then, but certainly she does now. When Carol was 4 years old, she used to tell her Mom and favorite aunt, “When you die, please continue talking to me…because you can.” Carol just knew in her heart that she’d be able to communicate with them, when they passed. Today she often does talk to her favourite Aunt T.J.
One night, when Carol was 5 years old, she was wakened by voices next to her bed. She knew it was not her parents and was petrified to open her eyes. All she kept hearing was, “She’s perfect for it.” The following morning she told her Mom. But her mother didn’t really know what to say other than, “It’s your imagination.” For 2 weeks after, Carol camped in her closet. She was terrified to sleep in her bed. She now realizes and knows it was Arch Angel Michael.
In her twenties, Carol used to go to spiritual circles in Montreal to listen to mediums and receive messages. Carol would always know who would give her a message and when she would be picked. Time after time was she was told in messages that she was a born channeler. Carol knew then, it was true. She was also told that she should do this to help others. Carol’s fear for years was, “How do I make a living doing that?”
Carol’s previous work experience includes training, teaching and management. Carol has trained thousands of people across North America in motivation skills, affirmations, NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), sales, customer service, starting a small business, merchandising and telephone techniques. She has also created and customized training materials, her entire career.
Short but deep interview with Brian Solis, author of
X: The Experience When Buiness Meets Design.
Brian is a return guest and friend for many years. He has a cool job doing what I think about everyday.. helping businesses adapt to the changing world of technology and shifts in the way us human beings view the world and experience life. His day job is a Principal at Altimeter Group, a Silicon Valley research and advisory firm.
We hear a lot of fads and buzz words about what makes a good business. Some of it from research and perspective from people like Brian Solis that gets misquote and sensationalized by pundits and media. I've learned to follow the hype back to the serious source.. often leading to insights that are missed by the masses and often that source is Brian Solis.
Brian's new book is unlike his previous book. It's very much a book, not intended for a digital format and a departure from the text only format. We talked about why he did that, how it changed the experience of reading for me, and whether it's a trend.

Brian Solis recently wrote about the 10 Commandments of Content Marketing and it was so compelling that we decided to discuss it on today's show. Marketers often confuse content marketing with engagement. Just because you get someone’s attention doesn’t mean your audience actually cares.
You spend all of this time following the work of others, listening to experts who preach soundbites and executing against programmatic calendar only to miss the very thing that connects with people…relevance.
Marketing relevant content is what matters – and we have the 10 Commandments of Content Marketing – you must give it a listen.
A digital analyst, anthropologist, and futurist, Solis has studied and influenced the effects of emerging technology on business, marketing, and culture. His research and his books help executives, and also everyday people, better understand the relationship between the evolution of technology and its impact on business and society and also the role we each play in it.
His new book, What’s the Future of Business (WTF), explores the landscape of connected consumerism and how business and customer relationships unfold and flourish in four distinct moments of truth. His previous book, The End of Business as Usual, named as a Top 10 Business Book by Publisher’s Weekly, explores the emergence of Generation-C, a new generation of customers and employees and how businesses must adapt to reach them. Prior to End of Business, Solis released Engage, which is regarded as the industry reference guide for businesses to market, sell and service in the social web.
