The right to vote has created black elected officials but many people believe that things have not changed. Can a person elected to public office really have an impact on the longtime condition of denial of access to economic opportunities? Legal segregation has ended, but social inequality remains a problem when it comes to equal protection under the law. So, what powers do our elected officials really have to change the conditions under which we live? Georgia State Representative Dar'Shun Kendrick joins us to discuss how elected officials can initiate actions that create opportunities for economic growth and can introduce laws that change behavior.

Mónica Méndez, PhD, just began her tenure as the Executive Director of Dress for Success Pittsburgh after moving from Orlando, Florida, where she was the co-Founder and CEO of the House of Mentoring and Empowerment (HOME), an organization advocating for young survivors of human trafficking. Passionate about empowering women and bringing the topic of gendered violence to the public sphere, she brings twelve years of experience in program creation and implementation, training and advocacy to her new endeavor. She has published and presented her work in both national and international forums and in front of a wide variety of audiences.
Dr. Méndez brings her experience, background and accomplishments to Dress for Success Pittsburgh to advance the economic empowerment of women. She recognizes that women who have job stability provide family stability which then translates to community stability. Her goal is to make Pittsburgh a stronger, healthier community by promoting the financial and social empowerment that women need in order to break the cycle of poverty.
The mission of Dress for Success Pittsburgh is to promote the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support, and career development tools to help women thrive in work and life. Founded in 2005, Dress for Success Pittsburgh was established to empower women to become self-sufficient and exit poverty, while also empowering women who suffered a temporary crisis and needed the short-term support to get back into the workplace. Our clients may be single parents, divorcees, low income, recovering from economic crisis, survivors of domestic abuse, veterans, re-entering homemakers, or previously incarcerated.
Saturday, May 22, 2015, Ireland carved out a special place in history. Ireland voters clearly voted YES for marriage equality. Ireland's amended Constitution now provides equal access to all the rights and privileges civil marriage offers.
The BBC reports: "Out of 43 constituencies, only the largely rural Roscommon-South Leitrim had a majority of "no" votes."
In this short podcast, we celebrate Ireland's history making! Before you go, do share your thoughts in the comment box below as well!
