This week on Scottscope Talk Radio, we’ll be diving headlong into Marvel’s upcoming Secret Wars Event! Will this be the end of the Marvel Universe as we know it? Will this reboot create greater fidelity between the Marvel Comics Universe and the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Does it bear comparison to DC comics Crisis on Infinite Earths? Is this merely a calculated move to boost sales? Have reboots become something of a safety net for both Marvel and DC? What good, if any, could possibly come from this?
We’ll also be talking about the historical epic Selma. Was it snubbed at the Oscar nominations? If so, why was it snubbed? Does the answer boil simply boil down to good old fashioned racism, or is there something else afoot? Is Spike Lee right about the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences? Should Black Americans simply dismiss and disregard the Oscars? Are the Oscars even still relevant? What does this mean for future Black biopics and historical dramas looking to get recognition from the Academy?
We’ll also be discussing the ongoing controversy with Clint Eastwood’s latest, American Sniper! Is Chris Kyle a true American hero, or a raging sociopath that is now being deified by Hollywood? Can the film be dismissed as merely jingoistic right-wing propaganda? How accurate is the film in its portrayal of Chris Kyle? Why has the Motion Picture Academy, which is largely seen as a liberal institution, nominated it for multiple Oscars? Should historical accuracy be a prerequisite for biopics?
"American Sniper," the Clint Eastwood-directed movie about the late Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, is the highest-grossing movie of the new year and also the most controversial. While most Americans consider Kyle to be a distinguished war hero, liberal film maker Michael Moore suggested that snipers like Kyle are "cowards." Others critics have called Kyle a racist and a sociopath. Why does the left insist on denigrating those who have made the greatest sacrifices to defend our freedoms? Former Navy SEAL Marcus Leone joins me to discuss the accuracy of the film, respond to the critics and give an inside account of what it takes to become a SEAL.
Army veteran Kevin Zimmerman has dedicated his life and career to serving his country and the people who fight to protect it. He is the author of A Time for Everything: The Kevin Zimmerman Story and has been awarded the Soldier's Medal, the highest honor that can be bestowed on a service member by Congress for an act of bravery when the nation is not declared at war, twice.
He has made history as a soldier, but Zimmerman has no desire to be branded a hero or an exceptional person. He only wishes to serve the men and women of the Armed Forces.
In 2012, the book was accepted into the U.S. Army’s Medical Museum and then seven months later it was added to the Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of African American History and culture.

My mom handed me a bat and said "kill them." She had enough and was determined that it would end. And down the steps I went dragging the bat.... clunk, clunk, clunk on each step ... I looked up and they were screaming and running off down the hollow by the dump. Was this the end or just the beggining. Tune in tomorrow at 8AM to hear my story about a bully and his gang that took every opportunity to make my life miserable.
But there was a hero and I tell you about him and how he changed my life.
Melissa Benoist got her break when she was cast as a female lead in the William McKinley High School storyline on Glee when most of the Fox dramedy’s original stars saw their characters either move to New York or leave the show.
Based on the characters from DC Comics, the project, from Warner Bros. TV and studio-based Berlanti Prods., centers on Kara Zor-El (Benoist). Born on the planet Krypton, Kara Zor-El escaped amid its destruction years ago. Since arriving on Earth, she’s been hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin, Superman. But now at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be.
Written by Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler, the project went through an extensive casting process, with several young actresses testing for the lead. Benoist had been consistently in the mix, first alongside Claire Holt and more recently considered along with Elizabeth Lail.
Benoist, repped by UTA, Anonymous Content and Frankfurt, Kurnit, Klein & Setz, has a supporting role in the feature Whiplash, which is nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture. She will next be seen in the film The Longest Ride, opposite Britt Robertson and Scott Eastwood.
Rachel Leigh Smith chats with Tabatha Pope, host of THE LIBRARIAN.
Rachel Leigh Smith writes romance for the hero lover. She lives in central Louisiana with her family and a half-crazed calico. When not writing, which isn't often, she's hanging with her family, doing counted cross-stitch, or yakking about life, the universe, and everything with her besties. There may also be Netflix binging...
She's a member of the Science Fiction Romance Brigade and Romance Writers of America.
My Name Is A'yen, book one of A'yen's Legacy, is her debut novel and very dear to her heart. It's the story of a man's search for a new identity, after his old one shattered, and for the courage to love again. Something Rachel has intimate experience with.

Hal Bodner is the author of the best selling gay vampire novel, Bite Club and the lupine sequel, The Trouble With Hairy. He tells people he was born in East Philadelphia because so few people know where Cherry Hill, New Jersey is located. The first person he saw ever saw was the doctor who delivered him, C. Everet Coop, the future US Surgeon General. Thus, Hal was ironically destined to become a heavy smoker.
He moved to West Hollywood in the 1980s and has rarely left the city limits during the past several decades. Hal is so WeHo-centric that he cannot find his way around Beverly Hills, the next town over. Hal has been an entertainment lawyer, a scheduler for a 976 sex telephone line, a theater reviewer and the personal assistant to a television star. He once owned Heavy Petting, a pet boutique where all the movie stars shopped for their Pomeranians. He also owned an exotic bird shop.
Hal has also written a few erotic paranormal romances -- which he refers to as “supernatural smut” -- most notably In Flesh and Stone and For Love of the Dead. His comic gay super hero trilogy will debut in 2015 with Fabulous in Tights to be followed soon thereafter by A Study in Spandex. He has recently agreed to write a series of mystery novellas featuring a gay detective and his sidekick, the madam of a bordello.
Hal recently married a man roughly half his age who had no idea that Liza Minnelli and Judy Garland were related. He believes that the use of hair dye is rarely an adequate substitute for .
