Jewish Noir: Contemporary Tales of Crime and Other Dark Deeds by Kenneth Wishnia

This anthology includes the work of numerous authors such as Marge Piercy, Harlan Ellison, S. J. Rozan, Nancy Richler, Moe Prager (Reed Farrel Coleman), Wendy Hornsby, Charles Ardai, and Kenneth Wishnia. The stories explore such issues as the Holocaust and its long-term effects on subsequent generations, anti-Semitism in the mid- and late-20th-century United States, and the dark side of the Diaspora (e.g., the decline of revolutionary fervor, the passing of generations, the Golden Ghetto, etc.). The stories in this collection include “Trajectories,” Marge Piercy’s story of the divergent paths taken by two young men from the slums of Cleveland and Detroit in a rapidly changing post–WW II society; “Some You Lose,” Nancy Richler’s empathetic exploration of the emotional and psychological challenges of trying to sum up a man’s life in a eulogy; and “Yahrzeit Candle,” Stephen Jay Schwartz’s take on the subtle horrors of the inevitable passing of time. These works include many “teachable moments” about the history of prejudice, the contradictions of ethnic identity, and assimilation into American society and culture.

When You Have a Dream--At Any Age--There is a Definite Path to Achieving It

    in Spirituality

Why do people say, "When I retire, I will do what I want"? Why when a child says, "I want to be..." do many people want to tell them it is just a dream. We need to give children confidence to do everything possible to achieve their dreams and we need to follow our dreams when we have them; age is not a factor. We can make a difference at any age and following your dreams can be easier than you think. This is what Purpose Talk Radio guest Serena Star-Leonard has proven in her own life and has shared with many people in her books, in her travels, and in her life. on Friday, Jan. 15, noon PT/3 p.m. ET/8 p.m. in the UK.

Serena Star-Leonard is a business coach and the best selling author of two motivational business and lifestyle books: "How to Retire in 12 Months: Turning Passion into Profit" and "How to Succeed in 12 Months: Creating a Life you Love."

In April 2012 she and her husband John left their home and possessions to travel the world, filming documentaries of people who make a difference to their communities. Their adventures have brought them through 26 countries since then, filming in some of the remotest communities and meeting some of the most inspiring people on earth.

They have spent time off the tourist trail in orphanages, slums, jungles and remote highland villages, even in a brothel and a prison. Every month filming inspiring new stories of triumph of those dedicated to empowering disadvantaged communities and the conservation of animals and the environment.

They carry their office with them and have made a lifestyle out of a passion project. In late 2015 Serena and John launched Travel Kids Club, a charity project designed to inspire a generation of socially conscious and compassionate kids who are excited about the amazing world we live in.

    Urban slums

    in News

The year 2007 was a turning point for the world, marking the first time when the majority of the global population lived in cities rather than in the country.

The world’s population is expected to surpass 9 billion by 2050, and increasing urbanization will push the urban-rural divide even further.

Do the world’s cities have the jobs, infrastructure and space to support this kind of growth? The answer might be found in the explosion of world slums over the past decade. The United Nations predicts that 2 billion people worldwide will live in slums by 2030.

In his 2006 book “Planet of Slums,” urban historian Mike Davis paints a dark picture of the future to come, writing:

The cities of the future, rather than being made out of glass and steel as envisioned by earlier generations of urbanists, are instead largely constructed out of crude brick, straw, recycled plastic, cement blocks, and scrap wood. Instead of cities of light soaring toward heaven, much of the twenty-first-century urban world squts in squalor, surrounded by pollution, excrement and decay.

Worldfocus.org’s weekly radio show on Tuesday, May 12 at 6:30 p.m. EDT will explore urbanization and the rise of slums, examining how such deplorable conditions might be addressed, even as the global economic crisis looms.

Worldfocus anchor Martin Savidge will host a panel of guests, including Erhard Berner, Mary Wiltenburg and Robert Neuwirth.

WHAT ARE WE DOING TO GOD'S WORLD?

    in Lifestyle

I OVERHEARD SOMEONE SAY RECENTLY THAT SINCE WE HAVE DOMINION OVER THE EARTH WE CAN DO ANYTHING WE WANT WITH IT.  AND AS I LOOK AROUND THIS EARTH OF OURS I AM SADDENED THAT OUR ACTIONS INDICATE MANY AGREE THAT WE HAVE NO LIMITS ON WHAT WE CAN DO IF WE KNOW THE RIGHT PEOPLE TO AGREE WITH THAT VIEW.  WE HEAR ABOUT PROPERTY RIGHTS, THE POWER WE WERE GRANTED OVER ALL LIVING THINGS AND AS A RESULT WE SEE THE RESULTS OF A "NO LIMITATIONS" POINT OF VIEW.

CITIES BUILD OUT, THE OLD AREAS TURN TO SLUMS AND ARE OFTEN LEFT TO CRUMBLE, WHILE AT THE SAME TIME WE MOVE FARTHER AND FARTHER OUT INTO THE RURAL COUNTRYSIDE AND START THE CYCLE AGAIN.  AND WE LEAVE A POCKMARKED WORLD BEHIND US. THE OLD BECOMES AN EYESORE AND THE NEW, WELL, WHILE IT MIGHT LOOK GOOD AT THE START IT STARTS TO AGE AND THE PROCESS REPEATS ITSELF.

BUT WHAT IF WE LOOKED AT THE EARTH FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE SHORT TIMELINE OF LIFE IN THE NATURAL SCHEME OF THINGS?  WHAT IF WE DECIDED TO LIVE AS THE TENANTS THAT WE TRULY ARE AND NOT AS THE OWNERS WITH THE POWER TO BUILD AND DESTROY IN ENDLESS WAVES?  WHAT IF WE FIXED UP INSTEAD OF ALWAYS MOVING ON?  WOULDN'T THAT MEAN THAT OUR CHILDREN, GRANDCHILDREN AND BEYOND WOULD INHERIT A BETTER, MORE BEAUTIFUL WORLD THAN WHAT WE SEE NOW?

ON THIS WEEK'S SUNDAY MORNING COMING DOWN WE'LL TALK ABOUT OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO RESPECT THE LAND THAT GOD GAVE US WHILE ALSO ENJOYING OUR TIME ON THIS EARTH.  I HOPE YOU WILL JOIN ME AS WE CELEBRATE OUR FATHER'S WORLD. LET'S USE IT IN A WAY THAT TRULY PLEASES HIM

Richard Rothstein: The Making of Ferguson and it's Impact on American's

    in Relationships

In Baltimore in 1910, a black Yale law school graduate purchased a home in a previously all-white neighborhood. The Baltimore city government reacted by adopting a residential segregation ordinance, restricting African Americans to designated blocks. Explaining the policy, Baltimore’s mayor proclaimed, “Blacks should be quarantined in isolated slums in order to reduce the incidence of civil disturbance, to prevent the spread of communicable disease into the nearby White neighborhoods, and to protect property values among the White majority.”

Richard Rothstein is a Research Associate of the Economic Policy Institute, a Senior Fellow of the Chief Justice Earl Warren Institute on Law and Social Policy at the University of California (Berkeley) School of Law, a Contributing Editor of The American Prospect, and an occasional contributor.

    Indie Books #105 (P. Sinclair)

    in Books

Tune in and join me as I welcome this week's guest.

As we begin our third year of Indie Books, author P. Sinclair joins us to talk about another new release. He'll be here from France to tell us about Descent Into Paradise.

Shasa, a beautiful Palestinian orphan - who will become one of Israel's most accomplished assassins - finds herself torn between her loyalties to the two men in her life, Major Pete Watson, the dashing special forces leader of America's most lethal anti terrorist unit and his Israeli counterpart, Major Zev Megrid, and her sense of duty to her ruthless boss, the Director of Israel's feared secret service, Mossad. Abu, forced to live in the teeming slums of a Palestinian refugee camp, has only one thing left to live for; revenge, which only Jewish blood can satiate. Juan Rios, having taken over the Family drug business form his murdered parents, is determined to make sure he does not suffer a similar fate. Aware that his own President's security force in Santiago is fluent in Hebrew, his first trip abroad is to Tel Aviv. Sheik Bashir, a wealthy Saudi and former freedom fighter in Afghanistan, has made his decision. Taking his men with him, he gives up the deserts of Saudi Arabia for the desert in northern Iran. He, and his men will join the thousands of fighters already training in a camp called Murat. There, he will continue the fight for the only thing he hates more than the Saudi ruling family are the Americans who put them there. Descent Into Paradise is a chilling journey into a world of violence and deceit on a global stage. The story, relayed through the trials and tribulations of its characters, offers the reader a unique understanding of the passions fueling both the Arab Israeli conflict and the Islamic Fundamentalists ascent to power
