    About Brain Pickings

Brain Pickings is a cross-disciplinary LEGO treasure chest, full of pieces spanning art, science, psychology, design, philosophy, history, politics, anthropology, and more; pieces that enrich our mental pool of resources and empower combinatorial ideas that are stronger, smarter, richer, deeper and more impactful. Above all, it’s about how these different disciplines illuminate one another to glean some insight, directly or indirectly, into that grand question of how to live, and how to live well.

Roberta Burton, an author by heart, lives in Tallahassee where she writes novels birthed from her clinical psychology and marriage and family therapy degrees. She writes to show readers how they can change regardless of how messed up they think they are.  Burton's award winning “The Do It Yourself Project” appeared in the Seven Hills Review and in Life Lessons: Writings from the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at FSU. Burton's poetry has appeared in The Florida State Poetry Association's anthology.  Other interests include award-winning watercolors, martial arts healing, and alternative health medicine. She has been a voracious reader since childhood when her mother stopped reading too soon. “The Burgundy Briefcase is my way of sharing what I have learned, as a therapist and as a human being, about living life on life's terms.”

The Author Chat Show with Lynda D. Brown

    in Books

Meet author David Merkatz, he's the author of the book Wrongly Charged: A Look at the Legal System.

This book is making quite an impact due to some of the recent  headlines dealing with police and abuse of power.

    About the book:

What would you do if you were arrested and wrongly charged with a crime? It can happen in the blink of an eye. It’s not supposed to happen in the United States, but it can at any time. After being advised by his attorney in 2013 that his new marketing strategy was legal, Florida locksmith David Merkatz was shocked to learn he was under criminal investigation. Then he was arrested and charged with money laundering and an organized scheme to defraud. With the flip of a switch, he was facing a 20-year prison sentence. He was terrified. Life as he knew it was over, and it happened in an instant. But David Merkatz was determined to fight back.

    About the author:

Until 2013, David Merkatz made his living as a locksmith in Coconut Creek, FL. Life, he thought, was pretty good. While there were some trademark issues with his business, he was making a living and enjoying his life. That all changed August of 2013, when police arrested David Merkatz and charged him and two of his fellow locksmiths, Peter Lomagistro and Joshua Levy, with a host of crimes ranging from money laundering to petty theft.

The Author Chat Show with Lynda D. Brown

    in Books

Meet author Jasma Starks. I'll be interviewing her on the show about her new book, Purpose Will Prevail: Principals To Activate And Walk In Your Divine Purpose.

    About the book:

Your purpose was the catalyst for your birth. Prior to being conceived in your mother’s womb, your life already had meaning. Because we’re human, however, we were bound to sin and become victims of fear. Sin separates us from God, fear keeps us limited to living unfilled lives, and both subjects us to silence. When silent, we allow the enemy to bully us and keep us in bondage. Before purpose can be born or released, there is a process. Purpose Will Prevail walks you through that process by giving you a set of principles that will help you acknowledge your authority and loosen the grips of fear and addiction so that you are freed to activate and walk in your divine purpose. In this book, Jasma Starks challenges each of us to take full responsibility in aligning our lives with that of God’s word so that we may not only discover our purpose, but fulfill and protect it as well.

    About the author:

A powerful prayer warrior, Jasma Starks has the remarkable ability to make God’s word plain and understandable. With a heart to spread the gospel throughout the world and elevate the name of Jesus Christ, she has devoted her life to teaching this generation of believers how to hear the voice of God and align their ways with His in order to take their lives from mediocre to meaningful.

Currently residing in St. Louis, Missouri, Jasma seeks, wholeheartedly, to please God in all her ways while implementing progressive change in her circle of influence. In March of 2015, she birthed Purpose will Prevail to activate passionate people to walk in their divine purpose. For more information, be sure to visit www.JasmaStarks.com.

    Author K.S Oliver

    in Lifestyle

K.S. Oliver is an author, poet, public speaker, model and business owner who was born in New York and raised in Georgia. At 30 years old, she is blazing a trail that many have been inspired by. The oldest of eleven children, K.S. graduated from Georgia Medical Institute with a diploma in Medical Billing and Coding in 2005 as well as  Colorado Technical College in 2011 with a degree in Business (while minoring in Criminal Justice). Since then, she’s been moving forward with building a unique and touching legacy.

On May 20, 2010, following the birth of her youngest child, K.S. was diagnosed with SLE, also known as Lupus. Subsequently, she was also diagnosed with Discoid Lupus (Skin Lupus), Fibromyalgia, Pulmonary Fibrosis, Hypotension, Hypothyroids, Cricoarytenoiditis (Lupus in her voice box), and severe depression.  With a myriad of health issues staring her in the face at the age of 25, K.S. had to make a decision on whether she would allow it to consume her or fight for the life she and her family deserved to enjoy. The choice soon turned into a mantra commonly used when discussing her life: “I have Lupus. Lupus doesn’t have me.”

Taking her life story and using it to inspire others, K.S. has penned two poetry books dedicated to building a connection from one Lupie to another and helping others to understand the emotions and trials that a Lupus patient may endure. Still Standing and Affectionately 360 are poetic gems that are touching for patients of any kind, but also speak to the hearts of every individual who reads them.  In 2013, K.S. was awarded as Poet of the Year for her outstanding contributions to the field of poetry

    in Pets

On Sunday May 3 at 6pm Eastern Tripawd Talk Radio is excited to welcome Dr. Sarah Boston, DVM, DVSc, DACVS.

As the talented author of one of our all-time favorite books "Lucky Dog: How Being a Veterinarian Saved My Life" Dr. Boston is a brainy, lovely and witty oncologist who shares her bumpy ride through the human oncology medical system when she diagnosed her own case of thyroid cancer.

Each day Dr. Boston is helping our pets fight cancer as Associate Professor of Surgical Oncology in the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at the University of Florida Gainesville. Her area of clinical interest is in surgical oncology and  research interests include: osteosarcoma, hemangiosarcoma, thyroid carcinoma and soft tissue sarcomas in dogs.

On this episode of Tripawd Talk Radio we're thrilled to ask Dr. Boston about her experience as both a cancer patient and clinician, and how it has touched her daily experience working with patients.

Of course we'll also discuss the University's advances in the field of surgical oncology as they relate to limb cancers often encountered by Tripawds members, such as hemangiosarcoma, soft tissues sarcomas and more.
