    2/10/16 w/guest Amy Haimerl

    in Books

    Today's guest is jounalist Amy Haimerl author of "Detroit Hustle."

    About our guest and her book:

    Journalist Amy Haimerl and her husband had been priced out of their Brooklyn neighborhood. Seeing this as a great opportunity to start over again, they decide to cash in their savings and buy an abandoned house for $35,000 in Detroit, the largest city in the United States to declare bankruptcy.

    As she and her husband restore the 1914 Georgian Revival, a stately brick house with no plumbing, no heat, and no electricity, Amy finds a community of Detroiters who, like herself, aren't afraid of a little hard work or things that are a little rough around the edges. Filled with amusing and touching anecdotes about navigating a real-estate market that is rife with scams, finding a contractor who is a lover of C.S. Lewis and willing to quote him liberally, and neighbors who either get teary-eyed at the sight of newcomers or urge Amy and her husband to get out while they can, Amy writes evocatively about the charms and challenges of finding her footing in a city whose future is in question. Detroit Hustle is a memoir that is both a meditation on what it takes to make a house a home, and a love letter to a much-derided city.

    Our Duties As Wives And Husbands 1 Peter 3:1-7

    in Religion

    1 Peter 3:1-7American Standard Version (ASV)

    3  In like manner, ye wives, be in subjection to your won husbands; that, even if any obey not the word, they may without the word be gained by the behavior of their wives;

    2 beholding your chaste behavior coupled with fear.

    3 Whose adorning let it not be the outward adorning of braiding the hair, and of wearing jewels of gold, or of putting on apparel;

    4 but let it be the hidden man of the heart, in the incorruptible apparel of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

    5 For after this manner aforetime the holy women also, who hoped in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection to their own husbands:

    6 as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose children ye now are, if ye do well, and are not put in fear by any terror.

    7 Ye husbands, in like manner, dwell with your wives according to knowledge, giving honor unto the woman, as unto the weaker vessel, as being also joint-heirs of the grace of life; to the end that your prayers be not hindered.

    IMMANUEL TEMPLE QWILL HAVE ONE HOUR PRAYER TONIGHT

    And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. 17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, 18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 19 to preach the acceptable year of the Lord. 20 And he closed the book, and he gave itagain to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.

    I think missionaries don't receive as much credit as they need to. After all, most missionaries leave their homes to go into other countries to spread the Good News. Some people find themselves in cultures that are vastly different from the ones they left.

    In particular, there are those individuals who go on missions to places where there isn't a drop of running water in sight. The people they are trying to reach congregate themselves as tribes with rituals and customs we in the developed world may find strange, unusual, and downright horrific.

    The modernized world would say these people do not need religion to mess up their way of life. They've existed like this for a long and don't need our help. Yet Jesus commanded us to go into the entire world and preach the gospel. Why?

    Commendable Conduct Before God 1 Peter 2:18-25

    in Religion

    1 Peter 2:18-25Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)

    18 [You who are] household servants, be submissive to your masters with all [proper] respect, not only to those who are kind and considerate and reasonable, but also to those who are surly (overbearing, unjust, and crooked).

    19 For one is regarded favorably (is approved, acceptable, and thankworthy) if, as in the sight of God, he endures the pain of unjust suffering.

    20 [After all] what [a]kind of glory [is there in it] if, when you do wrong and are punished for it, you take it patiently? But if you bear patiently with suffering [which results] when you do right and that is undeserved, it is acceptable and pleasing to God.

    21 For even to this were you called [it is inseparable from your vocation]. For Christ also suffered for you, leaving you [His personal] example, so that you should follow in His footsteps.

    Good Cop Bad Cop on Yesterday's Problems, Today's Issues, and Tomorrow's Future

    in Current Events

     Hosted by Michael Hampton and Gabriel Rich

    The control of minorities in the new America  influenced early policing. New England settlers appointed Indian Officers to police Native Americans, the St. Louis police were founded to protect residents from Native Americans in that frontier city, and many southern police departments began as slave patrols. Today, as we examine police slogans like, “To Protect and to Serve” and “Committed to Excellence”, in a historical context, it becomes obvious that they’re not directed at the policed neighborhoods. We find police officers in the neighborhood of indigenous Americans and other working class races in the news every day. They Kill first and hide the facts later. They are murdering unarmed men and defenseless women and children and it is plain to see, in plain sight, they are abusing their positions of power. Through the media, the crimes are covered up and Politicians turn their heads as the innocent die every day while made up stories justify their “legalized” violence.

    Monday Devotions

    in Christianity

    To the Church in Sardis
    3 “To the angel of the church in Sardis write:

    These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits[b] of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. 2 Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have found your deeds unfinished in the sight of my God. 3 Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you.

    4 Yet you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes. They will walk with me, dressed in white, for they are worthy. 5 The one who is victorious will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life, but will acknowledge that name before my Father and his angels. 6 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
