Joe De Sena’s Spartan Race Transforms Lives
It’s 5 a.m. on a frigid winter’s morning in Central Vermont. A lone, solitary figure dressed in a sweatshirt, low hikers, and warm-ups leaves a farmhouse and heads out into the backyard, which in this case, happens to be the base of a heavily wooded 3,000-ft. hill in the Green Mountains. A wool cap is seated down tight on his head, along with a headlamp, the only illumination around for miles that early in the morning. While the rest of the Eastern Time Zone remains in deep slumber, Joe De Sena, 44, founder of the Spartan Race series, begins his day with an intense vertical workout.
Joseph De Sena, 44, has been an entrepreneur since his pre-teens. From selling fireworks at age eight, to starting a t-shirt business in high school, to building a multimillion-dollar pool business in college, to creating a Wall Street trading firm, De Sena is a living definition of the word "entrepreneur." Currently he is a managing director for ICAP, a brokerage agency.
It's also well documented that Joe turned an interest in endurance racing into a passion. His racing resume is the stuff of legends - over 50 ultra-events overall and 14 Ironman events in one year alone. Most of his races are 100 miles or more with a few traditional marathons in the mix. (He once said that running a 26.2 marathon distance was "adorable."
To put it in perspective, he did the Vermont 100, the Lake Placid Ironman and the Badwater Ultra... in one week. The elevation climb for the 135-mile Badwater race, which starts hundreds of feet below sea level in Death Valley, is over 8,500 feet up to Mt. Whitney and temperatures soar into the 120's. Joe also biked cross-country in the Furnace Creek 508 which has been coined "The Toughest 48 Hours in Sport." It's no wonder his favorite quote is, "Death is the price we pay for life, so make it worth it."
Three to Get Ready - Collaboration - 5th Cohort Buell Fellows: Cassandra Johnson, Sena Harjo and Dorothy Shapland are collaborating on writing a new monthly parenting advice column in the Denver Urban Spectrum Magazine (DUS) for people of color. The "Nest Matters" focuses on early childhood and brain development from prenatal (the egg phase) through the stages of tweens when children prepare to leave the nest. (the flight phase). Cassandra Johnson, during her capstone research, identified a need to share the latest research finding in child development from experts and doctors in the field with "everyday" parents, caregivers, grandparents, and extended families, especially those caring for children of color. The "Nest Matter" features a monthly column and an information blog with an extended distribution of relative content and education links. Please join Cassandra, Dorothy, and Sena to learn more about collaboration in creating a much needed parent resource with latest research findings.
The show will be hosted by Linda M. Carlson, Buell Alumnus.

As many of you know Amendment 66 is a statewide ballot initiative to raise taxes in order to fund a “first in the nation” education reform effort in Colorado. The measure aims to provide more equitable school funding, increased accountability and transparency in how public dollars are spent and increased investments in early childhood education, English Language Learners, classroom technology, and teacher training. Coloradans will be asked to vote on Amendment 66 in the November 5, 2013 election in order to raise the nearly $1 billion in revenue to implement these reform efforts outlined in Senate Bill 213 that was signed into law by Governor Hickenlooper in the 2013 legislative session.
By listening to this radio show you can become more informed about the current state of education in Colorado, how this ballot initiative will impact the early childhood landscape, and the economic case behind such a bold reform effort. Please join our guests Bill Jaeger (VP of Early Childhood Colorado Children’s Campaign), Gloria Higgins (President and CEO, Executives Partnering to Invest in Children), and Sena Harjo (5 Year Buell Fellow and a Child and Family Educator, Clayton Early Learning) to discuss the facts and information all early childhood leaders should know about Amendment 66. The show will be hosted by Molly Yost, Policy Specialist at Clayton Early Learning.
