Part 2 of our 3 part discussion on depression.
Whether it leads to stress in its mildest case or suicide in its most tragic form, depression is a sickness that impacts everyone at one point or another. Join our discussion with Mental Health Clinician, Ms Latasha Anderson, as we delve into this topic and address listener concerns.
Speakers: Patrick J. McGrath M.D., Co-Director of the Depression Evaluation Service at the New York State Psychiatric Institute/Columbia University Medical Center and Maria Oquendo M.D. Vice Chair for Education & Training and Director of Psychiatric Residency Program at the New York State Psychiatric Institute/Columbia University Medical Center
Description: Dr. Patrick J. McGrath and Dr. Maria Oquendo will discuss what we have learned so far in efforts to tailor treatment for depression to the needs of individual patients, and a current research project aiming to enhance this in the future. They will address how the efficacy of current treatments is limited by doctors’ inability to predict in advance which person will respond to which treatment and the necessity of relying on “trial-and-error” in selecting treatments for mood disorders. They will discuss a new study funded by the National Institute of Mental Health using cutting-edge brain imaging and other biologic testing to enable selecting the best treatment for an individual at the outset of treatment.
Contact Information: For more information on obtaining treatment by participating in a research study, please visit the Depression Evaluation Service website at www.depression-nyc.org or call us at 646 774-8000. Its the Holidays again, times for parties, get togethers, family time. With that also comes many frustrations.
Maybe you will be alone during the Holidays for one reason or another.
You might have to deal with family members you really dont want to see.
Are you visiting with your significate others family/parents, possibly meeting them for the first times?
Do you know you will be around people who are only tolerating you but not happy your there?
Are you the fat girl or guy in the room? Do you feel like your on display for the rest to stare at and watch. You might even go through some unfair talk, treament or questions.
You might have gotten some invites but refused because of fears, of the unknown, who might be there, what they might think of you.
The Holiday are not always joyful, tonight we are going to talk about these issues and try to make this holiday season a happy one.

An increase in the rate of suicides around the holidays is unfortunate myth, according to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In fact, the month of December actually boasts the lowest rate of suicides for the entire year.
It seems that the media has perpetuated this holiday suicide myth, according to The Annenberg Public Policy Center. Researchers from the center analyzed articles over the last 10 years and found that 40% of the articles continued to report the incorrect myth, even though national statistics clearly show the opposite trend.
It is important to remember that while suicide rates may be lower during the holiday months, suicides in children still occur. If you believe that your child is suicidal or thinking about harming herself, it is important to seek immediate treatment.
