Reading comic books was a big part of my life as I was growing up. Batman and Superman were frequent companions, but my all time favorite comic was MAD Magazine. Comics and comic artists have evolved over the years from The Yellow Kid which was featured in 1895 in the New York World to web based artists like Jim Shaw and his Will Draw for Food creation. There was a time when Jim was living on his own, working three minimum wage jobs just to make ends meet. In Jim’s own words: “I recall early one morning, in the backroom of one of my tedious retail jobs, half-awake, I had a revelation. I did not want to simply exist, to merely pass through this one chance at life, forgotten, known by no one. An unobserved life is not worth living. With that notion playing in my head all day, I quit my jobs, moved back home with my parents, and applied to Brookdale Community College.” Jim had always been interested in comics, manga, video games and all other degrees of nerd paraphernalia, and so he began pursuing a career as a comic artist. He has gone on to work on multiple projects, comics and children’s books, such as Aerin, Will Draw for Food, I am a Superhero, and many more. Jim works online with many other artists, and in June of 2015, he co-founded a comic books publishing house called Blu Trinity Comics with two colleagues. Their goal is to help others get their comic books published, online, in-print, and into the hands of readers across the globe. Join Donna Wright tonight as she talks with featured author JK Ensley about her books and the upcoming Hummingbird Place Event, Romancing the Smokies.
K Ensley is a native Tennessean by way of Missouri, born there and quickly ushered down South. A product of public school and private college, she spent her early twenties bouncing across the country. Fascinated by rich culture, ancient customs, and thick accents, she is compelled to drink in the many exquisite differences humanity is gifted with. A self-described, happily divorced mother of three, she does little to hide her wicked wit, advanced sarcasm, and extreme shoe addiction.
JK currently has nine novels available and two more only weeks away from print. When recently asked to describe her A Dance with Destiny series, JK said…”A Dance with Destiny is kind of like… If Lord of the Rings and Legion had a baby girl and they enrolled her in Quentin Tarantino’s School for the Tragically Cursed where her teacher was Drizzit, she became best friends with Bleach, sat beside of Death Note, and ended up dating Black Butler… Then, yeah. That pretty much sums it up. It’s totally full of adventure and feels. So… Much… Feels.”
Even if you know nothing about the things she just mentioned, A Dance with Destiny is an amazing story full of love and loss, dreams and nightmares, friends and family. It will suck you in and spin you around until you hope it will never end.
“At the core of me, I’m one slightly twisted, pink haired, sword wielding, invisible ninja with a laptop, an imagination, and very little me time. That’s just who I am. I’m comfortable in my skin and I love my life. Totally not kidding about the hair, the swords, or the laptop. Although, I might have stretched it just a little with the invisible part.”

This will be an honest and encouraging talk with Rabbi Steven. I have been attending Sim Shalom for a while now and I find it to be a accepting and welcoming place to worship. The following was taken from www.simshalom.com
We are Jewish Universalist and believe that G-d equally chose
all nations to be lights unto the world.
Jewish Universalism teaches that one’s religion is not the
sole and exclusive source of truth. We reject the concept of a
God that would choose a favorite child.
We can accomplish “Tikkun Olam” by our unconditional
acceptance of each other’s peaceful doctrines and through J
G’milut Chasadim (Acts of Loving Kindness).
We are apolitical. We lovingly support Israel as our ancient and modern homeland. We continue to pray for peace.
We welcome and nurture everyone in every way-
into all of our rituals and into our hearts.
Our liturgy is fully participatory- you see everything on your computer screen! And our siddurim (prayerbooks) and prayers are transliterated into English so everyone can join in joyous song and prayer.
This will be a wonderful opportunity to see how this rabbi is bridging the gaps between the various groups in our society.
