Heading into Halloween, hosts Channa Schachet-Briskin and Ian Militello and guest Danny Donovan share favorite scary stories from around the world and our own corner of it.
Danny Donovan is a writer, actor, comic book author and expert on local "haunted houses" and spooky true stories! He grew up in Olde Towne Portsmouth, which has a rich war-time history and is home to many homes and buildings thought to still be occupied by the spirits of people who lived there centuries ago, and believes that the home in which he grew up housed spirits. He is also an actor on the Olde Towne Ghost Walk, taking place Oct. 28, where he'll be part of a guided tour of the "haunted" town. Danny has also been part of "ghost hunting" teams.

Children raised in Christian homes are almost always surrounded by beautiful and inspiring tales hand-picked by parents for bedtime. They're inspired by Jesus' miracles. They learn about Zacchaeus and the sycamore tree. They sing about Joshua and the walls of Jericho. They read the joyous tale of Noah's Ark and the boat filled with (often colorfully-drawn) animals.
In this podcast, we talk with Joey Kirkman, co-author of "Bedtime Bible Stories," about the darker tales of scripture and his recent book (complete with parental advisory label), and we take your calls and emails on the bible tales that might just keep Christian children wide awake with terror when the lights go out.

"Paws in the Piazza," a novel for middle grade readers by Jerilyn McIntyre, describes the adventures of Harley, a black cat who has moved to Venice with his American family. Inspired by the antics of the cat owned by her neighbors when McIntyre was President of Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Washington, the fictional Harley takes up with a group of local cats who roam wild in the alleys and neighborhoods of Venice, and meets the mysterious Angela, a beautiful white Angora who steals his heart. Then he becomes embroiled in a fierce and ongoing war between his friends and a rival band of cats, and discovers the magical order that underlies life in the enchanting and historic city that is his new home.
