Today Julie and Shirley brought "In Search of Restorative Justice" to the listeners by bringing real life ex-lifers to the platform to speak out on the lack of balance on the scales of justice. Two men who have both spent over 20 to 30 years of their lives incarcerated for committing a violent crime, The show was heartbreaking, inspiring and convicting all in the same heartbeat. If you want to talk one to one with either of these men, contact Julie or Shirley and the connection will be made. Also on the show was William Rollins, a law intern with USC Post-Conviction Justice Project who shared some real facts about this crisis in America's culture.
Jamie Carroll of Insight Prison Project and Delia Ginorio, Survivor Restoration Director at San Francisco Sheriff's Department stops by The Scales to weigh in on the policies and programming that are already in place that is restoring conditions in our communities. On today’s show Shirley and Julia had the great privilege to have Jamie Karroll from VOEG (Victim Offender Education Group) and Tracy McClanahan from the LAPD HAS (Honor and Strength) program. The conversation gave the listeners an inside/outside perspective of Restorative Justice. Very personal stories came to life as women were candid about passions in their lives and tragedies in their experiences. An inspiring show.
The show was spectacular today with Harmon and Wilson bringing the good news of Restorative Justice to the microphone. The duo's guests were Detective Tracy McClanahan from the LAPD HAS program, a 20 year veteran of LAPD and Herb Blake, author and re-entry advocate.
Detective McClanahan works through HAS, a program that started in December, 2009, with the LA Conservation Corp to help parolees get job preparation training. Detective McClanahan is also an ordained minister and now integrates spirituality into her work and discusses this phenomenon for the listeners
Mr Blake shared with the listeners what Centering Prayer meant to him when he was still incarcerated; he believes shedding the layers/allows God to speak to us, encouraging the listeners to start attempting meditation for even just a few minutes because God can speak to us through meditation. Herb also talks about his new book, The Last Place I looked.
How marvelous it is to hear the truth. It has a way of resonating with the soul. The show today was that kind of show; it was a soulful show of truth and redemption. A heartfelt thanks goes out to Mr. Henry Bratton, who loved us so much that he would come to share his life with us. The listeners have the opportunity to walk with Henry through his journey from childhood through 36 years of prison to his manhood of integrity today. Henry not only shared his challenges, he shared his victories and his love for his family and for society. A very warm and loving show.
When it comes to healing our at risk youth, who better to do this than youth who have overcome obstacles that still stand in the way other teenagers and young adults. On the show today was Myra and Brian who are the co-founders of a wonderful youth organization called, "The Young Warriors". This organization is for the children, by the children. Check them out at tiachucha and if you'd like to chat with Shirley or Luis, hit them up at firstname.lastname@example.org and Luis at email@example.com.
Peace and Blessings until next Sunday, same time, same station.
The prison system is failing, but in comes the humanitarians who are burning to effect change and to finally focus on the children of incarcerated parents, Huge mistakes have been made and are still being made with how we take care of the children in these situations. The children are the voiceless victims in this system of crime and punishment. The Guests who brought light to these dark chambers were Dawn Davison, the former Warden at California Institute for Women in Corona, a big believer in programming to help restore family relationships for incarcerated women and Sharon Content, the founder and Executive Director of Children of Promise in Brooklyn, NY, nonprofit that serves children all throughout the Bedford Stuyesant section of Brooklyn. These two women together were a storehouse of valuable information that absolutely inspired the listeners. A beautiful and Inspiring Show.
