SORT BY Relevancy
If you can't banish people outright, then you can try to erase them from students' minds. That's exactly what happened in Tucson Unified School District in Arizona, when conservatives ipassed an anti-immigrant racial profiling law, SB1070 that in effect targeted Latinos. At the same time, right-wing activists succeeded in passing a law banning the teeaching of Mexican American Studies, saying that a highly successful TUSD program that taught Chicano/Latiino history and culture to all students in the largely Hispanic district was instead harmful and divisive. The law, HB 2281, bans instruction that encourages "ethnic solidarity" among other things. Mind you, to begin with the ethnic studies courses were part of a federal court order to address historic and systemic racism in Arizona's education system.
The outrage over free speech rights of teachers and students is what prompted writer and teacher Tony Diaz to "smuggle" books by Latino authors out of his home state of Texas and into Arizona. He has been reporting on and organizing the efforts of free speech activists, ethnic studies activists, and students and teachers fighting for a relevant curriculum ever since.
TUSD high school student Maya Arce is a plaintiff who filed in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to overtun this Arizona law on grounds that it's unconstitutional. On January 12, 2015, she will testify and urge the Ninth Circuit to protect her First Amendment rights and the rights of other Arizona students and overturn this ignorant, bigoted, and narrow-minded law.

LatinoTalk Texas is news, issues and interviews important to Latinos in America. On today's show, December 12th, I discuss the Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe which is very important to Latinos in America, especially Mexicanos and ethnic Mexicans like myself. I read an article about riders in Illinois who rode to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Des Plaines and delivered a rose while passing on horseback. I went on to read more news from the Catholic News Service concerning the Synod of the Family and Conscious Rights of Catholics under assault in liberal America both by the Obama administration and the liberal City of Washington DC which enacted similar ordinances as Plano, and Houston, Texas which challenge religious freedom and expression. Later in the show, a caller, Juan Martinez, a former police officer in the Dallas Ft. Worth area called to ask about 287g, a federal program that enables local law enforcement to question person incarcerated to determine if they should be evaluated by immigration enforcement. Martinez wanted to know if that program is still in effect. I reported that as I know it is but in reference to SB 1070 which was largely found to be unconstitutional but also still authorized in vague terms state and local law enforcement to be "assist" immigration and customs authorities. Previously, this was not true as the Supremacy Clause prevented state and local LEO from investigating such matters without 287g authorization. However, since the SB1070 case, states have new authorization and in places like Arizona, they uses it indiscriminately and over zealously. I am very worried about the laws Dan Patrick will pass here in Texas and use it to violate the rights of Latinos here in Texas simply because we may look "foreign." Clearly a violation of the 4th Amendment.
