  • Abuse!

    in Christianity

Violence has many forms and most are not physical, although we tend to focus on the physical form as the most detrimental. The most common form of abuse is verbal. Life and death are in the power of the tongue, and we harm one another daily by not being tactful and showing consideration with our speech. We can also abuse ourselves, which not only hurts us, but those who love and depend on us. Abuse is loss of control based on insecurities, immaturities, and wanton disregard for ourselves or other people. We must all be mindful of our actions regarding not only one another but ourselves. The Lord commanded us to love the Lord God with all our heart, and all our soul, and with all our mind, but how can we do this if we don't love ourselves? Also he commnded us to Love our neighbors as we love OURSELVES... Again, how can we do this if we don't know how to love ourselves. Self-Love is the prerequisite for all external expressions of love. Abuse whether within or towards others, is evidence of some level of self-hate or lack of self-love. Join us as we uncover the root causes of Abuse and how we can learn how to stop it, this Monday, Aug 31, 2015 for Church in the Raw, call in # - (646) 652-2912. Tonight's special guest is Angela Williams from Marietta, Georgia, abuse survivor, author and returning NAASCA family member. Ms Williams is Founder & CEO of VOICE Today, launched in 2008, where the goal is to increase global awareness about childhood sexual abuse, and promoting its prevention, healing programs and resources. "As a survivor of incest, suffering in silence for 14 years at the brutal hands of my stepfather," she says, "my passion has become helping others learn to break the silence barrier of child sexual abuse and to make a difference in the lives of children in the next generation." A faith based organization, the values of the Voice Today Movement include the belief that prayer is the power source against the demonic forces driving child sexual abuse. They seek to break the silence of child sexual abuse by educating adults, speak out unashamedly and provide healing support for survivors, and that will become a platform for social change. Angela shares her own journey as a survivor in her book, "From Sorrows To Sapphires" and is co-author of "Pathway to Healing." Other books include "True Intimacy" and "Tough Talk To Tender Hearts." Angela is a tireless advocate. Through VOICE, Angela works to change society’s attitudes and actions that surround child sexual abuse, and seeks to shift the responsibility for preventing Child Sexual Abuse from the child to the adult. She hopes to empower survivors to find their voice and start the healing process.

Tonight's special guest is Vanessa McNeal from Cedar Falls, Iowa, 22, a child abuse and sexual assault survivor, NAASCA activist and documentary filmmaker. Her goal is to help other people heal and to spread awareness on the issues of child abuse and trauma. NAASCA needs MORE young folks in recovery like Vanessa! Growing up, Vanessa a lot of family violence until she was around five years old. Her father would leave the house voluntarily or because her mom would kick him out because of the fighting. "That left me and my older sister home alone with my mom who was very involved in the party scene," she writes. "I wasn't taken to school regularly so I became far behind in school to the point where I had to be placed in a special class for kids that were behind." Vanessa goes on, "Due to the lack of parental supervision I was placed in compromising positions with compromising people. I was exposed to men and drugs. There was a lot of DHS involvement and police intervention. My needs were not met adequately." Her grandmother eventually gained custody of all four siblings. "I was molested by my 2 older female cousins and by my older sister. There were times I went years without talking to my mother. We eventually began having a consistent healthy relationship around late high school." Vanessa's doing better now. "I struggled most of my life thinking that no one would want or desire me because I thought my own mom did not." She concludes, "I am in a wonderful place in my life right now and I have never been happier."

Tonight's special guests are Alan and Barbara Cohen from Connecticut, husband and wife. He's an attorney and author (aka Avi Morris) who's written about the experience of being a foster father in his book "Crocodile Mothers Eat Their Young". Barbara's a now-retired teacher, a middle-school language arts and literacy specialist who continues to teach adult literacy classes. It was her observations of children being removed from abusive homes that led the couple to become foster parents. They began fostering teens after their own three sons were grown and on their own. Their experience with a girl and her sister became the models for the novel's main characters, which has led them to become speakers at various foster care foster care and child abuse advocacy groups. Alan and Barbara's family has not been immune from the ravages of child abuse and trauma. Their niece survived the abuses of her grandfather, but is now a major success story. There were extreme bumps along the way, including she and her younger brother becoming wards of the state after falling into drug abuse. She attempted suicide twice before age 17, and was sent to a year long rehab. When she emerged she was dedicated to sobriety, finished high school with a GED, and got straight "A"s in a community college. Her brother, who Alan and Barbara fostered, is the other side of the coin. He is still struggling with drug abuse and in the process lost an academic scholarship to a good university. "In the meantime," Alan reports, "the grandfather's abuse pretty well tore apart the whole immediate family. There are many victims of one person's abuse."

Tonight's special guest is Kari Kelley from Sunnyvalle, CA, a child abuse survivor, advocate and author. Kari shares from her past childhood abuse how she learned to heal the core wound that was key in helping her move forward. Born in Southern California, Kari was conceived as a consequence of her mother being violently assaulted. Kari was adopted twice; once at 9 months old and again at 4 years old. Kari spent her life in this family being abused and neglected. Her experiences in these families left Kari wounded, battered and legally blind. Like so many others who have lived through similar situations, Kari spent years living as a victim until she discovered a deep inner strength and a purpose. She turned her childhood ordeal into an opportunity. She now inspires and assists people to overcome adversity in their own lives. Kari offers support through her Restore Your Resilience program which helps women overcome the struggle of being abused as children. She's been a featured speaker, author and vocalist on a wide variety of stages, panels, radio and TV shows across the United States.
