Dr. Adelaide L. Sanford, Vice Chancellor Emerita of the New York State Board of Regents
Sanford studied at Brooklyn College, where she earned her B.Ed. degree in 1947; she received her M.Ed. degree from Wellesley College three years later. From 1950 to 1965, Sanford taught in New York's elementary schools, before being hired as an assistant principal. Sanford earned her Ph.D. degree from Fordham University in 1967, and later became principal at Crispus Attucks School in Brooklyn, earning an outstanding reputation for promoting excellence and achievement at an inner-city school.
In 1986, Sanford won unanimous election to the Board of Regents of the State University of New York. As chairperson of the Regents' Committee on Low Performing Schools, Sanford played an instrumental role in shaping new educational policies that sought to close the gap among schools in student performance. Though outspoken and known for her African-style dress and Ebonics commentary, Sanford never wavered in her concern for the welfare of New York's students, particularly those at low-performing schools. While serving as a regent, Sanford also taught at Baruch College and Fordham University.
Many honors and awards were bestowed upon Sanford for her work; she received the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's humanitarian award, and distinguished alumna awards from Wellesley College and Brooklyn College. Sanford played an instrumental role in creating the John Henrick Clark meetinghouse. Sanford also served on the board of the Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone, and as a national advisory board for multicultural education.

Join us as we raised questions surrounding Ferguson Missouri grand jury decision in the shooting death of Michael Brown.
What is there to gain from a violent reaction and response to the grand jury’s verdict?
If the Grand jury decides that officer Darren Wilson should not be criminally charge in the shooting death of Mike Brown, what would be an appropriate response by concerned citizens?
“It’s possible that Darren Wilson will also be arrested and go to trial. But even if he’s convicted—even if the Brown family finds a measure of procedural justice—we will still be left with an unequal, segregated Ferguson in an unequal, segregated St. Louis County. The underlying problems of white flight, discrimination, and disinvestment will remain, and—absent a dramatic and unexpected change—they’ll persist into the next generation. We may never see another “Trayvon Martin” in Sanford, Florida, but I’m positive we’ll see another “Michael Brown
” in Ferguson son, Missouri”.
Birmingham, Alabama - the Magic City - saw events and courageous people who played a central role in the Civil Rights struggle. World Footprints goes on a walking tour through history along the Civil Rights Heritage Trail as we step onto the grounds where African Americans confronted Jim Crow era voilence with non-voilent civil disobedience. We will also explore Kelly Ingram Park and Birmingham's 4th Avenue Business District and discuss the time when segregation made this the city's "Little Harlem".
Brimingham is also known for it's rich musicial traditions and we'll pay homage to two iconic musical figures: Henry "Gip" Gipson whose 'juke joint' is the last standing music venue of it's kind in Alabama. Gip's Place has welcomed musicians from all over the world and every Saturday music lovers travel miles for an all-night music tailgate party on a "Sanford and Son" style lot. We will also introduce Dr. Frank Adams, Sr., a charter member of the Alabama Hall of Fame, who regaled us with stories of his life, a musical set and his time playing with greats like Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington. Sadly, Doc Adams passed away only one month after our meeting with him. We are honored to showcase his music throughout today's show.
As a side note, our trip to Birmingham was a very pleasant surprise. We highly recommend a visit to Birmingham, Alabama. There's a lot waiting for visitors to discover in the city "where freedom lives".

Carol Sanford is the author of The Responsible Entrepreneur: Four Game-Changing Archetypes for Founders, Leaders and Impact Investors.
From her website:
Carol has been leading major consulting change efforts in both Fortune 500 and new-economy businesses for more than 30 years. Her client list includes long-terms relationships with Colgate Europe and Africa and DuPont Canada, US, Asia and Europe.
She also works with new-economy companies like Intel, Agilent and leaders of change such as Seventh Generation. Central to Carol's philosophy and approach is a reimagined look at what makes and organiztion truly responsible. "Its important to find out what differentiates your business and cannot be copied by competitor because they cannot be you; and then thinking about how to do business so that communities, societies, and ecology as a whole are improved. These are not separate interwoven pursuits. It's completely doable, and a conversation worth having.
And we'll have that conversation about our one competitive advantage, that none of us can copy. That's who we are as individuals - all of our strengths and values and legacies and and dreams. As Oscar Wilde said Be yourself. Everyone else is taken.
Everyone else is a commodity. Being them means you compete in commodity-hell. With the whole being greater than the sum of its parts, I wonder why corporate policies insist we leave ourselves, our best selves, at home.
We’ll talk with Carol. We’ll hear how responsible entrepreneurs mastered these archetypes, connected with buyers, changed an industry and transformed lives.
