Tonight's special guest is Barbara Ochoa from San Francisco, a returning NAASCA family member who's Executive Director at Help4Guys.org. Barbara's here once again to talk about the events that are planned in celebration of "Male Abuse Awareness Week" (MAAW) which is held each year during the first week of December. MAAW is an awareness campaign that was started by the P. Luna Foundation in 2008, and the website is an extension of that program. The main focus is to change the negative social stigma that goes along with the topic of males who are victims of sexual or emotional abuse and domestic violence. "Most abused males avoid therapy and treatment because they are too ashamed or afraid of being judged for doing so," according to the web site. "By bringing the subject to light once a year we hope to make this topic more socially acceptable and in return more men will feel comfortable enough to seek the help they desperately need but in many cases avoid." Since the awareness campaign's inception in 2008 we at NAASCA have been pleased to participate hand-in-hand with Barbara Ochoa, and Bill Murray has appeared at several of the live events. We too want to help men who were victims of past abuse break their silence, in order to inspire younger men into getting treatment. Like Barbara, we have seen more and more celebrities come forward and many more news stories reporting on males who are victims of abuse.
Bellator 147 is an upcoming Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) event scheduled to take place December, 4 in San Jose, Calif. The event will air live on Spike TV and is headlined by Josh Thomson (21-8 (1)) and Pablo Villaseca (10-1) in a lightweight matchup. The co-main event is a featherweight bout featuring Daniel Weichel (35-9) and Georgi Karakhanyan (24-4-1). Weichel is the former M-1 Global Lightweight Champion and holds a blackbelt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Din Thomas. He weighs-in on his thoughts about his opponent, the card, Bellator MMA and the current state of MMA.
The Code of Hammurabi was written by King Hammurabi, who began ruling the Babylonian Empire in about 1800 BC. Hammurabi came to power using his strengths as a military leader, conquering many smaller city-states to create his Empire. Hammurabi believed that the gods appointed him to bring justice and order to his people, and he took this duty very seriously. Not long after his ascent to power, he created his Code, 282 laws written to define all relationships and aspects of life in the kingdom. The laws were displayed in a public place so that all the people could have the opportunity to study them. The laws applied to everyone, though application of the laws and punishment differed according to social class. The punishments for disobeying the laws were swift and harsh, further encouraging compliance. The form of the Code of Hammurabi is significant in the way that it is written. The simple language used to write the Code allowed the average member of Babylonian society to understand the expectations placed on them. Each of 282 laws was written separately with specific examples of indiscretions that were illegal, and the precise form of punishment that would occur.
