Make DC the 51st State - Support Statehood
Our guests today are two Statehood Activists Valencia Mohammed and Evanna Powell. Valencia moved to Washington, D.C. in January, 1981 to become one of the most outspoken women for the rights of poor Black men, women and children.
Valencia decided to launch a citywide campaign to remove all such derogatory, inaccurate and insensitive books and materials from the school libraries and classrooms. The campaign was a success.
This led to one of her biggest triumphs by becoming one of the first elected Muslim women in the country. She served one term as an at-large member on the D.C. Board of Education from 1992 to 1996. Valencia also ran for the city council unsuccessfully. Currently, she is the field director for the Leo Alexander for DC mayor campaign and a member of Parent Watch, Inc., a non-profit organization that empowers and informs parents how to access the system to obtain services that can assist in the total development of their families
