The NY Hip Hop Report is a weekly talk show, featuring discussion regarding relevant New York hip hop topics, interviews with artists and other industry professionals and invites live caller participation. The program, started in 2012 by Birthplace Magazine founder Manny Faces, has included interviews with iconic figures such as Big Daddy Kane and Video Music Box’s Ralph McDaniels, as well as special shows, including an April, 2013 broadcast live from the 10th annual L’Original Festival, a yearly international hip hop festival in Lyon, France.
In 2008 M-Dot was named to Stuff Magazines Hot 100. Also in '08 M-Dot shared the honor of "2 Dope 2 Sleep On" with Casey Veggies presented by 2dopeboyz.com. He went on to receive positive reviews for his mixtapes Money Doesn't Own Thought (2009) from DigBoston.com and Making Doubters Over Think (2010) from the Boston Globe. Continuing with European exposure M-Dot performed at the 2010 Winter XGames in Tignes, France. For years he has solidified a fan base through local shows and mixtapes in New England. M-Dot won both major Boston hip-hop music awards in 2010: at the 22nd annual Boston Phoenix awards, Best Hip Hop Act, and at the 23rd annual Boston Music Awards, Hip Hop Artist of the Year. He then went on to win Hip Hop Dependency "Artist of the Year 2011. M-Dot garnered more accolades for his first EP, a collaborative effort with DJ Jean Maron, Run MPC.The Run MPC single "You Don't Know About It" Ft. Masta Ace reached number 2 on RapAttackLives.com, college radio charts and the 12 inch record finished fifth in vinyl sales in 2010 at undergroundhiphop.com. His third installment in his acronym series, More Doubters Over Thinking, was also well received. In May 2012 in support of the release "Layer Cake," M-Dot embarked on a 33 day European tour with the likes of Slaughterhouse (group), Saigon (rapper) & El Da Sensei. The Layer Cake cd was also considered another example of acute lyricism. Layercake finds M-Dot weaving a go-for-the-gold battle-rap narrative over beats from young producers.
Every year, the president and Congress meet to set refugee quotas for specific countries. "By its very nature, it’s not a legal process; it is a political process,” says Bill Frelick, the director of the refugee program at Human Rights Watch. A vulnerable group of refugees who do not have a big profile and do not have a “special” connection to the United States, are left out. Acceptance of refugees is a popularity contest that is politically driven.
When Saigon fell in 1975, the U.S. had no comprehensive refugee policy. When refugees from the South China Sea started arriving, the government passed the 1980 Refugee Act, giving way to a universal definition for what it meant to be a refugee, and founded the resettlement program that exists to this day. The Vietnamese exodus continued through the '90s until the U.S. formally closed its resettlement program in 1994.
By 2007, the U.N.’s refugee agency called the Iraq exodus the "largest long-term population movement in the Middle East since the displacement of Palestinians" in 1948. But at that point, the U.S. had admitted fewer than 1,000 Iraqi refugees.
There are currently 2.6 million Afghan refugees. But in the last 20 years, the U.S. has taken in less than 20,000.By 1994, 2.3 million Rwandan people had fled the country. The U.S. has taken in less than 1,500. The 1999-2001 civil war in Liberia resulted in 640,000 refugees. The U.S., has accepted about 33,000.
Out of the more than two million Syrian refugees, the United States has taken in a total of 90 since that country’s civil war began.
Soviet Jews have been steadily streaming into the U.S. for decades surpassing their relocation to Israel. The Lautenberg Amendment, a special 1989 law, even granted refugee status to Jews from the former Soviet Union without having to prove specific persecution.
