Ruslan Provodnikov vs Mike Alvarado Recap w/ Kelsey McCarson

    in Sports

When it rains, it pours. Except in this case, said downpour is a good thing, as it comes in the form of really sickening action to close out the rest of the year. The latest installment of "Hello, this is 2013 calling, boxing fan, and you're welcome" was Ruslan Provodnikov doing battle with Mike Alvarado this past weekend to the tune of a stoppage after the 10th round in favor of the Russian. That exquisite gorefest would probably be enough to carry a two-hour show, but James Foley of BadLeftHook.com and Patrick Connor of Queensberry-Rules.com will also preview Bernard Hopkins vs. Karo Murat and Peter Quillin vs. Gabe Rosado, among other musings. Joining the show this week is Kelsey McCarson, writer for TheSweetScience.com and BleacherReport.com, and member of the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board. Thanks for tuning in!

Brandon Rios vs Mike Alvarado 3 Review

    in Sports

Alvarado and Rios own one victory apiece in a rivalry that would stand out in any era. Their previous encounters, in 2012 and 2013, were memorable slugfests that had fans on the edge of their seats from the opening bell. Now, they’ll meet in 12-round welterweight showdown before a partisan Alvarado crowd. Boasting a loyal following, Denver’s Alvarado (34-3, 23 KOs) has battled many top talents in the 140- and 147-pound weight classes, including Juan Manuel Marquez, Ruslan Provodnikov, Mauricio Herrera and Mike Dallas Jr. His crowd-pleasing style is an ideal match for Oxnard, Cal. native Brandon Rios (32-2-1, 22 KOs), who never backs down and has squared off recently with Manny Pacquiao and Diego Chaves. Previewing the bout, is the special “Road to Alvarado-Rios 3,” which replays Saturday, Jan. 24 (11:45 a.m. ET/PT) on HBO and is available on HBO ON DEMAND® and HBO GO® Following the first Rios-Alvarado fight, Yahoo! Sports wrote, “Each round was bitterly contested and the advantage would swing from one guy to the other like a pendulum,” adding that it was “one of the most sensational bouts in a long time. Opening the telecast, Mexico’s Gilberto Ramirez (30-0, 24 KOs) makes his HBO debut in a ten-round light heavyweight matchup with Russia’s Maxim Vlasov (30-1, 15 KOs). Ramirez, who is moving up in weight to take on Vlasov, relies on knockout power and ring savvy; appearing on HBO Latino in November, he stopped Fulgencio Zuniga in the eighth round. Vlasov has won his last 11 fights.

Amir Khan vs Devon Alexander Bradley vs Chaves Preview

    in Sports

Happy holidays to everyone out there and boxing is giving its gift this weekend with a pair of events televised on HBO and Showtime that will surely have boxing fans happy for the upcoming holidays. For this article I’ll be going over the Golden Boy Card that involves such names as Keith Thurman, Abner Mares, Victor Ortiz, and both Charlo brothers that will be headlined by Amir “King” Khan squaring off against Devon Alexander “The Great.”

Amir Khan (29-3 with 19 KOs) is a fast-handed boxer who is born and very well followed in the UK. He has fought and defeated fighters such as Marco Antonio Barea, Paulie Malignaggi, Chino Maidana, and Zab Judah. However, everything hasn’t been prefect for Khan, sustaining losses from Lamont Peterson, Danny Garcia, and of course his 1st career loss, a 1st round KO to Breidis Prescott in the UK 6 years ago.

Devon Alexander (26-2 with 14 KOs) also has a pretty darn good resume. He’s defeated fighters such as Junior Witter, Juan Urango, Randall Bailey, a controversial win against Lucas Matthysee, and he also holds wins over Andriy Kotelnik and Chino Maidana. His losses have come to the likes of Timothy Bradley and Shawn Porter. He’s more of a technical fighter with not much power, but he also is a southpaw, which could complicate the rhythm of this fight.

Timothy Bradley (31-1, 12 KOs) is one of the most determined fighters in the sport of boxing. He has shown the ability to go toe to toe with the very dangerous Ruslan Provodkinov, and outbox the very crafty Juan Manuel Marquez. Coming off a loss against Manny Pacquiao he wants to rebound with a victory against the very underrated and dangerous Diego Chaves (23-2, 19 KOs).

Chaves is a typical power punching aggressive fighter from Argentina with good boxing skills. Both fighters are looking to make a statement this Saturday night in the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.
