"An Indigenous Peoples' History of the U.S.", author Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz

    in Education

Today on The Gist of Freedom at 2:30 please join guest host William Katz and author Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz for a lively discussion about her latest book

"An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States"

    WWW.BlackHistoryblog.com  archived on iTunes www.BlackHistoryUniversity.com
    -----------------------

The first history of the United States told from the perspective of indigenous peoples

Today in the United States, there are more than five hundred federally recognized Indigenous nations comprising nearly three million people, descendants of the fifteen million Native people who once inhabited this land. The centuries-long genocidal program of the US settler-colonial regimen has largely been omitted from history. Now, for the first time, acclaimed historian and activist Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz offers a history of the United States told from the perspective of Indigenous peoples and reveals how Native Americans, for centuries, actively resisted expansion of the US empire.

And as Dunbar-Ortiz reveals, this policy was praised in popular culture, through writers like James Fenimore Cooper and Walt Whitman, and in the highest offices of government and the military. Shockingly, as the genocidal policy reached its zenith under President Andrew Jackson, its ruthlessness was best articulated by US Army general Thomas S. Jesup, who, in 1836, wrote of the Seminoles: “The country can be rid of them only by exterminating them.”

Spanning more than four hundred years, this classic bottom-up peoples’ history radically reframes US history and explodes the silences that have haunted our national narrative.

POWERHOUSE BOMBSHELLS CAFE CON LECHE THE REAL ROXANNE AND JOE FUNHOUSE CELESTINO

    in Music

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARCELA OLIVAR!

The Real Roxanne, nee’ Adelaida Martinez, was the specific lady that the three gentlemen of U.T.F.O.; Kangol Kid, the Educated Rapper, also known as E.M.D., and Doctor Ice, were talking greasy about when they dropped their classic ‘80’s hit, ‘Roxanne, Roxanne,’ produced by Full Force which sparked the, then controversial, now legendary, “Roxanne Wars.”

After dropping a pair of mediocre selling solo albums, her self-titled debut {1988} and its’ follow-up, Go Down (But Don't Bite It), in ’92, on Select Records.

Joe "Funhouse" Celestine, of the original New York Funhouse will also join us.  FunHouse opened up on March 30, 1979 by 4 partners - Joe, Ronnie, Jerry & Vinnie.  The Funhouse was a popular 1980s club on Manhattan's West side that became a way of life for many in NYC and the surrounding boros.  DJ John "Jellybean" Benitez made this his home with his unique style as a DJ while he dated Madonna, and yes, this is where Madonna started her carreer, along with other legendary artists such as New Edition.  One of the Village People even got married there. The club became very famous. It was included in many articles about disco and the dance scene.
There are many people who loved and still love this legendary club... With it's famous happy clown logo. Numerous of people have it as a precious part of their life and many have great stories to tell about the club and the people frequenting it. Some memories you'll find below and I guess there's more to come...  Phone lines wll be open to the public.. (347) 215-7698

A Conversation With Roxanne David, aka Miss Clareese

    in Comedy

Roxanne David/Miss Clareese had her first experiences with comedy in 1991. Her comedic debut was as "Brownie, the Christian Clownie" for Pizza Hut’s Kid’s Night.  Although Roxanne consented to do it, she admits it was under duress. However, as soon as she put on the costume and started interacting with the children as well as the adults, she realized she absolutely loved it.

Roxanne/Miss Clareese started getting more and more invitations to adult affairs. So, she would do humor that was geared more for an adult audience. However, she was still "Brownie." Then, one day, a good friend from church was talking with her and joking around with her voice.  Right then she turned to Roxanne and said, "You know who you are? You are Miss Clareese." That was all Roxanne David needed to hear. It was like this huge light came on. From that point on, she has been praising the Lord as "Miss Clareese." She gives her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, all the Praise, Glory and Honor for every opportunity that He so graciously gives to her to share His awesome Word.

Miss Clareese has traveled the globe sharing the Gospel through comedy. As she is fond of saying, "Every time I look in the mirror, I am just simply amazed at what the Lord can do with leftovers."

Roxanne/Miss Clareese has an Associates Degree in Theological and Evangelical Studies from the District of Columbia Bible Institute. Miss Clareese has led workshops on Gospel Comedy at the Greater Washington Christian Education Convention and is currently the President / Founder of The National Livin’ On Laughter Gospel Comedy Association.

Miss Clareese is happily married to Andre David and the two of them are the proud parents of a son, Joseph David.

    TGIF FREE FOR ALL

    in Politics

TUC Radio is produced by Maria Gilardin

Maria Gilardin learned radio in the KPFA news department in 1980 and was one of the founders of the women's department. She co-wrote the GATT Guide for the Earth Summit in Rio, was founding producer of the national weekly public-affairs show Making Contact, and is a member of the International Forum on Globalization. Since 1993, Maria has written and produced radio on global trade and great ideas of local resistance to globalization.

About this series: "An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States"

About the author: Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz grew up in rural Oklahoma, the daughter of a tenant farmer and part-Indian mother. She holds a Ph.D. in history and is an activist in the international Indigenous movement for more than four decades.

This first part of the program brings you Dunbar-Ortiz' description of North America before invasion, the emergence of the US concept of a chosen people, the development of the role of the US military as a force for genocide that seamlessly transitioned into the US foreign wars, the role of militias, a brief history of AIM, the American Indian Movement, and the consequences of the Gold Rush in California.

During Q&A Dunbar-Ortiz was asked about an earlier book by her. The Great Sioux Nation, published in 1977, came out of the 1974 Wounded Knee trials where Dunbar-Ortiz was an expert witness.

Dunbar-Ortiz is the author or editor of seven other books, including Roots of Resistance: A History of Land Tenure in New Mexico; The Great Sioux Nation; Red Dirt: Growing Up Okie, and Blood on the Border: Memoir of the Contra War. She lives in San Francisco.

I recorded Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz on Dec. 4, 2014, at Green Apple, one of the last used bookstores in San Francisco. Her book had been published two months earlier.
