(Roanoke, Va.) – Mrs. Great Plains International, Maggi Thorne, 33, of Lincoln, Nebraska, was crowned Mrs. International 2014, Saturday, July 26 at the 29th Annual Mrs. International Pageant held in Jacksonville, Florida. The two-hour event, held at the Moran Theater at the Times Union Center for Performing Arts, featured 64 contestants from around the world competing in three categories, including interview, fitness-wear and evening gown. Thorne was crowned Mrs. International by her husband, Fred, before a sold-out audience.
A committed global advocate, Thorne will spend her year as Mrs. International promoting her platform, Soles4Souls, an award-winning non-for-profit organization that is committed to wearing out poverty through the simple gift of used shoes. Thorne is an international spokesperson for the organization and will travel the globe to impoverished countries delivering shoes to those in need, as well as continue to build national partnerships with professional athletic teams, speak with global branding partners, and race in the OCR United World Championship and Warrior Dash World Championship to raise awareness and funds for the organization.
Thorne began her work with Soles4Souls in 2013, and in one year, has made a significant contribution to the organization by breaking a world record for the most shoes collected -- 21,000 in all-- initiating three national partnerships with a racing series (what is the name of the series) and two partnerships with NFL teams. Additionally, she competed on NBC’s American Ninja Warrior to bring visibility to the efforts of Soles4Souls.
Thorne is a graduate of the University of Nebraska. Originally from San Diego, California, she was recruited nationally by Division I schools after winning the California 100 Hurdle State Championship.
This week, Kansas City Nathan is back behind the mic, as we talk about happening in the world of model railroading, railfanning, Silver Rails Country and last but not least the American Passenger Rail Heritage Foundation. He will be broadcasting the show from the Depot Inn & Suites, located in Silver Rails Country, centered in LaPlata, Mo.
First off, we will check in with our Regional Roundup Correspondents from around the country, and we will talk about major railroad-related news items. Then, Nathan will discuss the recent N-Scale Enthusiast National Convention, which was held in Roanoke, Va., between June 24th and 27th, after being able to talk to a lot of the hobby's major manufacturers, as well as the up-and-coming companies in the model railroad industry; plus all the things he got to experience while in Virginia--which should be on each railfan's "Railfan Bucket List."
Next, we will discuss happenings in the American Passenger Rail Heritage Foundation, including updates on the facilities, what you the loyal listerners could do to help and volunteer, as well as the different programs that the APRHF supports, including the popular National Parks Services' Trails & Rails program between Chicago, Ill. and LaPlata.
We will then welcome Tom Anderson, of Silver Rails Vineyards LLC, Silver Rails Country's newest feature to the show. We will be talking about wine & railroads and how they go hand-in-hand, both in LaPlata & Silver Rails Country, and throughout the United States. If everything works out according to plan, we may even have a couple of other guests who have railroad-themed wines, from a vineyard 20 miles south of LaPlata, in Macon, Mo.
We will have a interesting show, and we would like to invite you to join in the live discussion! Be sure to call in to ask your questions, present your opinions, and talk trains!

Join us this week as we welcome the rock band, Madrone. Hailing from Roanoke, VA., band members John "JD" Sutphin - vocals/guitar, Blaine Davis - Bass Guitar, Joey Coleman - Drums, and Dana Cox - Guitar, Madrone is ethereal, with a sound that emanates strong melodies that are supported by slamming catchy drum beats and modern, almost industrial bass lines. Literally born into music, as the grandson of the late prominent bluegrass and country artist Jim Freeman, Sutphin has always had the desire to create and perform music in his veins. Their hit single “November” best depicts the band’s range with Sutphin describing it as “everything we do as a band. From the ethereal lead and synth lines, to heavy guitars and subject matter very close to my heart, it's everything I ever wanted in a Madrone song.” “November” is just one of many of the masterpieces created by Madrone in the past decade. The group has spent nine years writing and recording two full length albums and two EPs and have just released their latest album "A Light in the Sky" which is available now on iTunes and other major media outlets. We will talk to them about their upcoming schedule, get a behind the scenes look at their music, feature their latest songs, and ask them to share their message for the troops. Please be sure to visit Madrone at http://madroneonline.com/ and spread the word. Fans are welcome to call in and speak live with with them during the show (718) 766-4193 If you would like to participate in the live chat during the show, you must sign up on the show site first and then log in during the show. More great music for a really great cause! And as always we will give shout outs to our deployed military listeners. Join us, Sunday May 18th 2014 at 4:00 PM EDT! Our message to the troops....WE do what we do, because YOU do what you do.
