Risk Assessment - Can We Predict Further Violence?

    in Current Events

Wouldn’t it be convenient if we just had a check off list for figuring out whether the person we want to enter a relationship with could turn abusive?  Well, it’s not quite that easy, but there are some indicators of risks that the criminal justice system can use to try to determine how high the risks of danger are for person involved in perpetrating domestic violence.  This tool helps courts and counsellors look at a situation and what it could turn into in the future.   Is this magic?  Is it the cure-all for DV?  Can it help eliminate homicides?  We will talk risk assessment, how it can help, what the weaknesses are, and what the latest research shows on Saturday with Connie Sponsler-Garcia of the Battered Women’s Justice Project.  She’s worked for more than 30 years as an advocate for adult and child victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and domestic trafficking; she’s run a battered women’s shelter; and she served on the Department of Defense Domestic Violence Task Force.  She helps combine fatality review findings and community safety assessment methodology in Arizona and is a consultant to the Domestic Homicide Prevention Initiative.

You Can Run, but You Can't Hide

    in Lifestyle

Have you ever played hide and seek? The idea is for you to hide and for the person who is "it" will attempt to find you after counting to a specific number. Once found, the player is chased and if they are not fast will be tagged and become it. The object of the game is to get to base without being tagged. Better yet, to not even be found.

Adam and Eve did this in the garden after they sinned. In Genesis 3, Adam speaks to the LORD and says, "I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself."  Why? Because of sin. Many times in our lives we don't want things exposed. We prefer to keep our sin locked away or hidden in a special compartment. We hide as if we're playing Hide and Go Seek with God.

On today's broadcast our discussion continues in Galatians 5:19 -21 as we uncover those things that has us entangled and weighed down. In the words of boxing legend Joe Lewis, "You can run but you can't hide." It's time to take an honest assessment of your life through the looking glass of God's word.

    Breastfeed, Chicago!

    in Education

Katrina Pavlik (Board Chair), founder of Breastfeed Chicago, M.Ed., postpartum doula, certified lactation specialist. “My dream for Chicago is that it will become the most breastfeeding-friendly city in the country. Not only will new moms get the help and support they need from their health care providers, but they will benefit from an extensive breastfeeding-support network. Moms will be seen breastfeeding their children anywhere, anytime… and it will be considered a normal, natural way of feeding our children.”

In 2011, Katrina Pavlik created a closed Facebook group to invite
people to start a conversation about breastfeeding in Chicago. Within six
hours, it had grown to 400 people. "I saw a need for a community that
could discuss how to make Chicago more breastfeeding friendly. From the Facebook group, we expanded and added the Breastfeed, Chicago! blog and resource list.
