Taipei, Taiwan's Bustling Lunar(Chinese)New Year Shopping Center-Dihua Street

    in Travel

Dihua Street or Grocery Street is where many residents of Taipei, Taiwan head to for stocking up on food, snacks and treats for the Lunar New Year, or Chinese New Year. I recently visited the famous shopping market just two days before New Year’s Eve. I was there to shop, sample food, indeed why many people pay a visit and talk to some Taiwanese about why they enjoy Lunar New Year.

Dihua market, for most of the year is Dihua Street-a center in Taipei for traditional Chinese medicinal herbs, fabrics, incense, and Taiwanese tea processing. First constructed in 1850, it’s original name was Center Street.

This is the busiest time of year for Dihua street, with extra food stalls and vendors using all kinds of tactics to get your attention. Most of which are pretty friendly.

Sampling is big here and many people come just to load up on the freebies. If you’re new to the food of Taiwan it’s a great place to learn about some of the traditional snacks and newer items with ingredients that can range from peanuts to dried fish.

It’s Taiwan, so of course there’s always someone cooking food around the corner.

The southern portion of Dihua is the oldest street in Taipei, dating back to Dutch rule from 1624-1661.

In Taiwan many markets were built around temples and Dihua is no exception with worshippers getting in their last wishes for the year, or perhaps a good start to the new year.

    Iowa Caucus Week review

    in Politics Conservative

It looks like there have been some underhanded dealing in this weeks Iowa Caucus.  You have Ted Cruz being accused of telling voters that Ben Carson was headed to Florida to suspend his campaign.  You have Rick Santorum and Rand Paul actually suspending their campaigns.  Hillary Clinton has a narrow victory but it looks like she claimed victory too soon.  You have the FBI probe into her emails which she is saying she "never sent those emails".  Does that sound familar with "I never had sex with that woman".  How many different ways can she throw her own campaign?  Bernie Sanders is keeping the race close and he is making her defend her speaking fees.  Super Bowl is tomorrow.  I know this doesn't follow our shows format but it is my show and I can go off on any tangent I want.  LMAO!!! We will cover whatever else you can think of.  Looking forward to another live episode at 2 pm today

Rick Snyder poisoned the water utilized by the city's 100,000 residents; the African Union is sending a panel to Burundi in an effort to resolve the internal political crisis while accusations of human rights violations by Bujumbura are leveled as the administration of President Pierre Nkurunziza says Rwanda is facilitating the training of rebels in refugee camps; Libya is awaiting yet another imperialist intervention while the so-called Islamic state spreads its influence within the embattled North African state. In the second and third hours we begin a monthlong focus on African American History Month for 2016. The first installment will examine the role of Dr. W.E.B. Gone But Not Forgotten on Brunch In The Basement With JaVonne

    in Music

On this segment of Brunch In The Basement with JaVonne, we take time to talk about and listen to some of the music of our legendary singers who have passed away. Some left us way too soon, Like Aaliyah, Minnie Riperton, Phyllis Hyman, Biggie, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Gerald Levert, Heavy D, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, and Tupac. What might they be giving us and feeding us today had they lived longer. And then those voices that I grew up on, Billie Holiday, Barry White,  Rick James, Teddy Pendergrass, McFadden and Whitehead, not to mention our recently fallen angels like Natalie Cole and Maurice White. This show will pay honor to as many as we can discuss in two hours. Please join us for this tribute and Brunch in the Basement with JaVonne.

Was Flint Water Poisoning and Intentional Act of Genocide

    in Radio

This show will examine whether Flint's water supply was intentionally poisoned as an act of genocide as Councilman Wantwaz Davis and film maker Michael Moore have both stated.

Back in December, before the crisis became a national news story, Moore tweeted:

This is a racial killing, Flint is 60% African American. When you knowingly poison a Black city, you are committing a version of genocide. If this were elsewhere, and the white leader blocked a Black city's clean water supply and made them drink poison, we'd call it ethnic cleansing.
