    in Music

Internationally acclaimed gospel music icon, Richard Smallwood drops in on Patrick D. McCoy, The African-American Voice in Classical Music to discuss his unique style of infusing classical themes into his celebrated gospel artistry.  Smallwood will also discuss his new recording, Promises, which will be available in June 21, 2011.
    About Richard Smallwood:
Richard Smallwood is a legend in his own time. After four decades as one of the most popular inspirational artists in the music business, with classic tunes such as “Total Praise;” “Center of My Joy;” and “I Love the Lord” to his credit, the Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter and pianist continues to enjoy widespread popularity and influence. Even the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, has recently recorded a Richard Smallwood tune, “Faithful,” on her latest CD.
Recently, while standing before a recording studio full of hand-picked friends and music industry colleagues, gathered for an intimate live recording session of Smallwood’s new CD, PROMISES (Verity Gospel Music Group), he made a startling confession. “I had not written a song since my mom died in 2005,” he told the stunned audience. “I thought the gift I had dried up. I would try to write and nothing would come. I’d sit at the piano, I’d pray and there was nothing.”

God Said I Can Radio with Richard Smallwood

    in Goals

The story of Richard Smallwood reads like the script to a great movie. It's a struggle for survival—leading to success beyond his wildest imaginings—set against the long odds of poverty and discrimination that were just a routine part of everyday life for most African-American families in the “Old South.” The cast of characters includes parents of often diametrically different dispositions: a stern taskmaster/pastor father, and a mother of a gentler, artistic disposition; and a little boy born into the world with prodigious gifts as well as a profound loneliness. The scene could open with a baby in his crib, humming melodies to hymns before he'd even learned to articulate a word to go with them; and later, as a youngster in his robe, standing before a mirror, “conducting” a choir of Christmas-tree-ornament angels, to whatever music was playing on the radio at the time. Then, as a young man at Washington, D.C.'s renowned Howard University—living a life immersed in both the great classical music of the last several centuries, and the campus radicalism of the late-‘60s that raised a loud—and proud—voice, that would not be silenced, demanding that studies of African and black American history, music and all art forms be included in the school's curriculum. Perhaps, more than anything, it's a love story: the love of a mother for her son, God Almighty's love for all His children, and Richard Smallwood's lifelong love affair with music. And while it's not a movie—at least, not yet—Richard takes a long and loving look over his career…past, present and future…on his new, 25th Anniversary release, aptly titled Journey! Live in New York. Get Your Copy but more importantly welcome Richard Smallwood to God Said I Can Radio! A Lengend, A Gospel Great!

LIF Talk with Cherie Interview with The Choir Boyz

    in Music

The Choir Boyz is comprised of five distinct vocal gifts, all having their roots as Baltimore natives. Randy Roberts, Derek Owens, Martin “Marty” Wilson, Darrell Holmes and Richard Yerby make up this gospel-soul quintet, and are an amalgamation of street life and God’s grace. Each one with a story behind his voice, has tasted life’s trials and worldly triumphs, but ultimately found redemption in the hands of God. Their history together spans over 20 years, and their unwavering belief in and commitment to God has culminated into the powerful quintet that is the Choir Boyz!

Each member of the Choir Boyz is a gifted musician in his own right, which serves only to enhance the total Choir Boyz experience. They have shared the stage with other musical giants such as Mary Mary, Donnie McClurkin and Kirk Franklin – just to name a few. Most of the group’s members got their start in the R&B arena before moving to gospel. Since that time, these godly soldiers have committed to writing and recording original compositions that bring hope to the masses through heartfelt lyrics based on true life experiences.

The Choir Boyz’ musical library consists of their freshman release “Ordered Steps”, followed by the sophomore smash, “This Time”. “Sing unto the Lord” marked their junior release in 2006. After a brief hiatus, the group came together with a fresh, new sound. Their recently released comeback single, “The Devil is a Liar” has been received by their fans with a thunderous WOW!

With a sound uniquely their own, The Choir Boyz convey the message of the gospel that is palatable to any listener. With their current project in the works, the Choir Boyz are showing no signs of stopping.
