  • Leo Santa Cruz Defeats Abner Mares, Ceja-Ruiz Thrills, Dirrell-Rubio Preview

    in Sports

Once more Premier Boxing Champions offered up a couple of good fights, this time on ESPN. Undefeated featherweight Leo Santa Cruz proved he was on Abner Mares' level and then some in winning a majority decision. And in the co-feature at Staples Center, super bantamweights Julio Ceja and Hugo Ruiz traded knockdowns in an entertaining battle before the Ceja scored a stoppage in the 5th. Credit where it's due.

That doesn't mean that PBC's schedule is much to get excited about; they for some reason chose Marco Antonio Rubio to step in (and up in weight) against super middleweight Anthony Dirrell on Sunday, though the rematch between bantamweights Jamie McDonnell and Tomoki Kameda on the same card is intriguing. They should have switched it up and had that rematch headlining on CBS.

There's also the matter of another rematch to discuss: Shane Mosley vs Ricardo Mayorga II. Whatever it is that needs to be said about that Pay-Per-View, we'll say it.

Maybe there will be updates on Andre Berto's athleticism, show mascot Victor Ortiz's latest run-in with the law, Adrien Broner's most recent gift, and more. James Foley of Bad Left Hook and The Fight City's Patrick Connor will sherpa you through this.

The Ed & Fuz Show Episode 75

    in Sports

The guys return to discuss the SummerSlam & NXT fallout in what was an intriguing pay-per-view card. Ed makes his case as to why the Sasha Banks-Bayley title bout was the “Match of the Weekend” as well as the Jon Stewart's nWo moment, while Fuz complains why a guy in semi-retirement is still being pushed, with The Undertaker defeating Brock Lesnar in controversial manner. The guys also crap on the Ricardo Mayorga-“Sugar” Shane Mosley boxing pay-per-view boxing match after the pre-fight “brawl” that broke out when Mayorga allegedly touched Mosley's wife. Finally, Ed gets Fuz's perspective on the Robert Griffin III situation as the relationship between the quarterback and his teammates / coaching staff continues to deteriorate.

Leo Santa Cruz Proves Critics Wrong Gets it Done in Slugfest against Abner Mares

    in Sports

A raucous crowd of 13,109 at Staples Center got their money’s worth on Saturday as two Mexican warriors Leo Santa Cruz and Abner Mares went to war for the vacant WBA Super World featherweight title.

In what was billed as the biggest fight of their careers, not only were Los Angeles bragging rights on the line between the two Southern California-based Mexican immigrants, but pride, as both fighters came into their mega-clash as world champions in multiple weight classes.

Mares, 29, surprised many by going right after his adversary to start the fight, bringing reminders to the day Marvin Hagler fought Tommy Hearns back in 1985.

The action was impeccable, as both fighters never let the other have an inch, like two NASCAR drivers battling for the same spot in the dying laps, except we were just getting started.
