Total Knee Replacement: A Storybook Approach

    in Health

August 6, 2015: The number of total knee replacement (TKR) surgeries has more than tripled over the past two decades.  Despite the growing popularity of the procedure and the improved outcomes, TKR is an invasive and expensive procedure.

One physical therapist has watched patients and families struggling to cope with the information overload that accompanies TKR surgery, and decided there had to be a better way to prepare families and improve expectations.  To fill that void, she has written a guide book for families called “Granny Gets a New Knee: and a whole lot more.”

In this episode of Move Forward Radio, she discusses some of the things patients and family caregivers should know about total replacement surgery – perhaps most crucial of which are the benefits of seeing a physical therapist before the procedure.

Talking In Circles: NASCAR's Charter System & Tony Stewart's Replacement

    in Sports

Tonight on Talking in Circles we discuss all things NASCAR and break down the Charting system in NASCAR as the owners have now become franchises. Who gets a charter and who doesn't and who will have to race their way into the 58th Daytona 500.

Also Brian Vickers has been mentioned as a replacement for Tony Stewart during Speedweeks 2016. We will discuss how we feel about that.

David Gilliland & Reed Sorenson have rides for Speedweeks 2016 as both have found non-chartered rides to drive in and will have to race their way into the Great American Race this weekend.

Also former NASCAR driver Lennie Pond passed away at the age of 75, passing away due to cancer. Pond won one career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race in 1978 at Talladega Superspeedway. We remember him.

Also in the XFINITY Series side of things Bobby Labonte will drive the No. 18 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing at Daytona. JGR announced Wednesday that NOS Energy will sponsor 16 races for the team including 15 with Kyle Busch.

Stanton Barrett will drive for Rick Ware Racing at Daytona along with Scott Lagasse who will compete in the truck series as well. Lagasse will drive the No. 93 Chevrolet in XFINITY and the truck race will be run for NTS Motorsports. No update on Ben Kennedy's future.

On the truck side of things, Reed Sorenson, Austin Theriault, Timmy Hilland Austin Hill will compete in the event at Daytona as loose ends continue to get tied.

Plus we will tell you what we think the Daytona 500 entry list will look like and speculate what the rules may look like for qualifying for the event.

    Total Knee Replacement

    in Health

July 3, 2014: As many Americans look to maintain healthy and active lifestyles up to and through their retirement years, some are finding their knees are struggling to keep up. Wear and tear can lead to osteoarthritis, which can lead to debilitating pain. And increasingly, people are turning to knee replacement surgery to help solve this problem.

In this episode, orthopedic surgeon Brian Burnikel, MD, and physical therapist Jackie DelGiorno, PT, DPT, OCS, discuss what patients face when they elect to get a total knee replacement - from the crucial pre-operative conditioning, to the surgery itself, to the almost immediate physical therapy that follows, and the long-term prognosis.

    HABITS:

Power of Habit Quotes, by Charles Duhigg

"When a habit emerges, the brain stops fully participating in decision making. It stops working so hard, or diverts focus to other tasks. So unless you deliberately fight a habit – unless you find new routines – the pattern will unfold automatically."

    Cue, behavior, reward.

"To change an old habit, you must address an old craving."

"For some habits, however, there’s one other ingredient that’s necessary: belief. You need the capacity to believe that things will get better."

"We know that a habit cannot be eradicated – it must, instead, be replaced."

"Willpower isn’t just a skill. It’s a muscle, like the muscles in your arms or legs, and it gets tired as it works harder, so there’s less power left over for other things."
