Have you ever had a friend who you knew was in a dangerous, controlling, or emotionally destructive relationship or marriage? There are so many things you want to TELL them they need to do, but we all know in the end we CANNOT MAKE them do anything. They must be the person who finally makes the choice, THEY ARE DONE!!
There are many ways however in which you can help them cope so that they have peace within to make the best decision. The most important of these is simply be a LISTENING EAR WITHOUT JUDGMENT. Victims, no matter what gender or how old, are shameful they have allowed such a mess to grow and interfere with the lives of those around them. I know from personal experience. However, it is when we turn away or judge them that creates the most damage.
Tonight let's find out how we can all be a friend for a victim of Relationship Violence. This show is a community outreach broadcast of Butterfly Dreams Abuse Recovery and in no way constitutes any form of professional psychiatric or therapeutic services. Thank you and we hope you will invite just one friend, maybe even that friend, to join us for another excellent discussion.
Relationship abuse is a pattern of control exerted by one partner over another using coercive, threatening, and/or violent strategies. Control is often kept in place by isolating the victim, promoting fear, and narrowing options. Abuse is different than BDSM in that only one person determines what will happen, no consent is asked for or given, and the person being abused cannot stop what the abuser is doing.
There are many forms of abuse and control that can happen in relationships. It can include stalking, threats, intimidation, and physical violence. Often things start out at a much lower level, making an abuser hard to recognize. Early warning signs include possessiveness, jealousy, frequent mood swings, and anti-social behavior. Abuse usually escalates in frequency and severity over time. The best way to combat relationship violence is to become educated about it.
Today's guest is Barbara Paradiso, a pioneer in organizing academic programs for educating professionals working in the field of domestic violence at the University of Colorado's, School of Public Affairs. Yes, we can provide interpersonal violence awareness/education to the public, and make every effort to organize the legal and justice systems. However, the real question is: can abusers be rehabilitated? We know that abusers can stop their behavior when the fear of getting caught looms large, but can the abuser be clinically treated to "cure" his/her behavior?
Do we have data on the rate of recidivism, and the efficacy of treatment for abusers?
Why has this societal problem of interpersonal violence received so scant attention? While the current NFL domestic abuse "scandal," has resulted in a public out cry, will these recent incidents, not to mention the long history of unreported/reported interpersonal violence, go under the radar until another tragic incident occurs?
Barbara Paradiso is currently the Director of the Program and Center on Domestic Violence at the School of Public Affairs, University of Colorado Denver. Barbara has worked on behalf of battered women and their children for more than twenty years as an advocate, administrator and activist. Prior to her position at University of Colorado Denver, she served as the Director of Domestic Violence Programs for the Sunshine Lady Foundation of North Carolina. For twelve years, from 1985-1997, Barbara was the Executive Director of Boulder County Safehouse. Barbara has been active in the Colorado Coalition Against Domestic Violence as Co-Chair of the organization, Chair of the Legislative, Membership, and Finance Committees. She is currently Board President for the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless and a newly elected member to the Board of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

Things within in the NFL are getting worse with new issues of domestic violence by players popping up every day. Arizona Cardinals back up running back Jonathan Dwyer can now add his name to the list of athletes, (including Adrian Peterson, Ray Rice, Greg Hardy and Ray McDonald) who are being accused of domestic violence after he allegedly broke the nose of his girlfriend.
With the list of these type of incidents increasing, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is coming under heavy fire and the question is being raised of if there is a growing issue of mental health among NFL players that are causing these types of incidents. Also, we'll examine why similar incidents by athletes like Hope Solo and Johnny Weir aren’t getting the same amount of outrage by the public and the media.
To give us all insights on this issue will be CNN contributor and former ESPN editor Keith Reed. Tune in this Saturday at 10am for the discussion.
